This full‑time opportunity is located at the Central Iowa VA Health Care Facility in Des Moines, IA.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.

Doctor of medicine or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed.

Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth.

Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

Other residency paths: (1) Approved ACGME or AOA residency/fellowship program; (2) One year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice; or (3) Non‑U.S. residency followed by at least three years of independent practice in the U.S.

Residents currently enrolled in accredited programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) if they meet the basic requirements.

PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis.

PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged.

PRPs may perform certain restricted duties under supervision.

Exceptional cases may be approved by the Facility Director with a memo to the VISN Director.

Physical requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre‑employment examination as part of the initial process.

Duties

Provide expert consultation and treatment for patients with pulmonary conditions, including comprehensive evaluations and ordering diagnostic labs and studies.

Interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests and follow up on results in a timely manner.

Perform pulmonary procedures such as bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, chest tubes, pleurovac and other skills as permitted by facility privileging.

Work with pulmonary clinic staff, respiratory staff, and other disciplines to develop and implement plans of care.

Provide Electronic Consultation (E‑Consult) services and review consults for determination of appropriate care.

Typical work hours: Monday-Friday 8‑4:30 pm; alternative hours may be agreed upon at joining.

Each full‑time provider must work a minimum of 80 hours per pay period (every two weeks) unless on leave status.

Educate and counsel patients regarding medical conditions, health status, and prescribed treatments.

Collaborate and consult with nursing, social work, psychology, and pharmacy staff to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case conferences, including discharge planning.

May serve as supervising or collaborating physician for a Physician Assistant and provide clinical oversight.

Provide surrogacy for colleagues when they are on leave and may be asked to travel to community‑based outpatient clinics as assigned.

Follow departmental and VHA policies for leave and attendance and work within Title 38 appointment guidelines.

Maintain quality of care meeting professional standards.

Work within privileges unless an emergency necessitates otherwise.

Timely documentation and encounter required per Facility Medical Staff By‑Laws.

Complete administrative work in a timely fashion.

Participate in facility, VISN or national workgroups and committees.

Engage in continuous education, professional development, research, and mentoring as appropriate.
