The Learning Center for the Deaf is a nationally-recognized leader of services for deaf and hard of hearing children, adults and families. TLC Diversity Statement:
Together, we continue to build an inclusive culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates our TLC community members' diverse narratives. TLC believes that diversity fosters innovation. Provide services for pediatric deaf/hard of hearing population ages 3-22 with diagnoses such as, learning disabilities, developmental delays, cerebral palsy, emotional/behavioral concerns. Intervention services are designed to enhance the student's potential for learning, to assist the student in acquiring those functional performance skills needed to participate in and benefit from the educational environment, and to help the student function independently.
The support services team includes Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language therapy. Physical therapists work closely with these professionals, along with educational staff and students' families. The Speech and Language Pathologist assesses the communication and language abilities (signed, written and/or spoken) of students (using formal and informal assessment tools), in terms of present functioning and future potential, and determining the most effective modalities for development of proficient language and communication abilities and/or remediation. The Speech and Language Pathologist provides speech-language services in coordination with the students IEP to support their communication and language skills.
Assess communication skills, conduct thorough tri-annual assessments and determine appropriate speech-language goals for each student.
Prepares an individual communication/speech-language program for each student, involving written goals and strategies to be implemented and documents progress. In addition, participates as a member of each student's educational TEAM, attending IEP and planning meetings requested.
Provides direct service to students in the areas of language development (signed, written and/or spoken), spoken English and listening skills, communication strategies, social-pragmatics, and/or AAC in either a one-to-one therapy setting or small group approach.
Communicates regularly with parents, teachers, therapists (both in school and with those serving the student outside of school) regarding student progress to provide well-integrated services across disciplines, as needed.
Some lifting may be required when working with young students or students with special needs, however, TLC embraces and celebrates a spirit of inclusion and diversity, and reasonable accommodations and modifications will be made whenever possible. The diversity of our student population may require that some assignments have a heavier physical responsibility due to safety.
The Learning Center for the Deaf provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any type without regard to race, color, religious creed, national origin, sex, pregnancy, gender identity/expression, age, criminal record, disability, sexual orientation, familial status, veteran status, marital status and any other legally protected characteristic.
