Certified Orthotist/Prosthetist - Orthotics Clinic

Overview The Orthotist/Prosthetist - Advanced Practitioner functions as a Mobile Prosthetic and Orthotic Care (MoPOC) program clinician. They are responsible for the clinical care needs, administrative oversight, and accreditation compliance for the local VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) served, and for independently managing and operating a mobile lab out of a Ford Transit 350 vehicle. The position supports a four-day workweek with 10-hour days.
Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
Education: (1) a bachelor’s degree or higher in orthotics and prosthetics from a CAAHEP-accredited program; or (2) a bachelor’s degree or higher in any major along with a post-graduate orthotics or prosthetics certificate from a CAAHEP-accredited program
Foreign Graduates: Graduates of foreign degree programs must have proof of a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (or foreign equivalent) with a specialization in orthotics and prosthetics
Board Certification: Board certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC) or the Board for Orthotist/Prosthetist Certification (BOC); the certificate must be current and maintain continuing education requirements
English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d)
Grade Determinations: GS-12, including completion of 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level as an orthotist/prosthetist, knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) as specified
Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of regulatory requirements established by ABC, BOC, NCOPE, IAOP, AAOP, JCAHO, and related bodies; ability to analyze data and provide reports using CPRS, Vista, DSS, HCPCS codes and other patient data systems; ability to provide training on new technologies; familiarity with administrative functions (budget, inventory, space/workload planning, NPPD, PNS, DSS) and accreditation requirements
Preferred Experience: Certified Prosthetist/Orthotist with at least 3 years clinical experience; mobile care experience preferred
Physical Requirements: Ability to operate a motor vehicle; ability to stand, lift, carry, sit, stoop, bend, pull, and push; may require PPE and annual TB screening
English Language Proficiency and other requirements as applicable
Responsibilities Drive from SLVHCS to the CBOCs in a Ford Transit 350 mobile workshop/laboratory three days a week
Visit Veterans at home who cannot access care in other ways
Provide at least 25% of care to Veterans with the most clinically complex needs (e.g., multiple limb amputations, mobility disability from diagnoses such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or stroke)
Perform administrative duties including budget development, inventory and resource management, scheduling oversight, and quality assurance activities
Assess patients and discuss indications/contraindications with the physician to develop treatment plans
Consider new and emerging technologies to design devices for complex conditions
Provide ongoing care and periodic evaluation to ensure fit and function of prostheses, orthoses, soft goods, inserts, shoes, and compression devices
Review and triage prosthetics requests and coordinate with scheduling
Determine in-house vs outside vendor referrals based on patient needs
Maintain knowledge of regulatory requirements and provide oversight and training of staff as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 6:30am to 5:00pm; four-day/10-hour schedule; may change based on agency needs
