Police Officers & Law Enforcement Officers

This is professional and community oriented work in the prevention of crime and enforcement of local, state, and federal laws. Duties involve protection of life and property through enforcement of laws and ordinances, performance of routine patrol duties, investigation of crimes and accidents, and traffic enforcement; all within established departmental guidelines. Duties involve constant public contact in the performance of work while tolerating stressful situations. Must provide quality service to the public without losing sight of what laws have to be enforced.

Non‑Certified applicants are those who are not currently sworn police officers and have not completed a Police Academy. Please refer to the FAQ sheet available.

Responsibilities

Affect an arrest, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints.

Communicate effectively over law enforcement radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications, often under adverse conditions such as siren usage and high‑speed vehicle operations.

Communicate verbally and effectively by listening to people and by giving information, directions and commands.

Conduct searches of buildings and large outdoor areas that may involve walking and/or standing for long periods of time and which requires the ability to distinguish color and perceive shapes.

Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time.

Enter and exit vehicles quickly to perform rescue operations, pursue a suspect or answer an emergency call.

Exercise independent judgment within legal guidelines, to determine when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, when probable cause exists to search and arrest and when force may be used and to what degree.

Gather information in criminal investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects and confidential informants.

Load, unload, aim and fire handguns, shotguns, and other agency firearms from a variety of body positions in situations that justify the use of deadly force while maintaining emotional control under extreme stress.

Manage interpersonal conflicts to maintain order.

Operate an emergency vehicle during both the day and night; in emergency and pursuit situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits while exercising due care and caution and in exception to traffic control devices and in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions and environmental conditions such as fog, smoke, rain, ice and snow.

Perform law enforcement patrol functions for long periods of time while working rotating shifts and unanticipated overtime.

Prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations.

Read and comprehend rules, regulations, policies, procedures and the law for purposes of ensuring appropriate officer behavior/response and performing enforcement activities involving the public.

Perform other essential tasks as identified by the Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Training Council's Job‑Task Analysis.

Additional Duties

The following listing is not all inclusive of what a police officer is required to do in line of duty but will highlight the most common activities encountered in police officer work:

Climb over obstacles and through openings; jump up, down and over obstacles and crawl in confined areas to pursue, search, investigate and/or rescue.

Perform tasks that require lifting, carrying or dragging people or heavy objects while performing arrest, rescue or general patrol functions.

Perform searches of persons which involve touching and feeling to detect potential weapons, etc.

Pursue fleeing suspects on foot both day and night in unfamiliar terrain.

Subdue resisting subjects using hands and feet while employing defensive tactics maneuvers of approved non‑lethal weapons.

Use body force to gain entrance through barriers to search, seize, investigate and/or rescue.

Perform duties in all types of weather conditions.

Qualifications

Must meet one of the following criteria:

Certified : Current or prior sworn Police Officer status; prior urban experience greatly preferred.

Certifiable : Successful completion of a recognized Police Academy.

Non‑Certified : Successful completion of both MCOLES Reading and Writing test and Physical Fitness test. (You must receive a written test score of Band A or Band B.)

Must be a citizen of the United States.

High school graduate or possess a GED equivalent.

Height in proportion to weight as determined by a physical examination.

Uncorrected vision correctable to 20/20 vision by contact lenses; no greater than 20/40 vision correctable to 20/20 with glasses. Must not be colorblind.

No prior felony convictions (includes expunged convictions).

Must have a valid Michigan driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

In good physical and mental health, free from impediments of the senses and possess all extremities.

Must meet hearing standard as established by MCOLES.

If hired, the City will sponsor you through Delta College's Police Academy while providing wages and benefits.
