Public Health Advanced Practice Nurse

Prince George's County

Nurse Manager Grade A27

The Prince George's County Department of Health is currently seeking qualified applicants to fill a Nurse Manager grade A27 position, in the Health and Wellness Division. This is first line supervisory professional and administrative work performed to address the health care needs of target populations (e.g. adults, seniors, developmentally disabled) using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Incumbents supervise and coordinate the daily activities of subordinate level nurses, staff, and support personnel to provide a variety of professional nursing and health care services to a diverse population of clients, patients, families, and groups from diverse cultural backgrounds. Services provided by incumbents are designed to promote health and wellness and prevent disease and disability. Incumbents experience frequent contacts with nursing, medical, and social services personnel to supervise, coordinate, and provide comprehensive health and nursing care programs and services to the public. Work assignments are performed in a variety of community settings (e.g., home, nursing home, office) and may expose the employee to infectious/contagious diseases. Work assignments are performed within the framework of established nursing care standards and departmental policies and procedures. Work is performed under the general supervision of higher-level health personnel and is evaluated through observation, records review, and employee/management conferences.

The PGCHD works to protect and support the public's health through numerous services that range from restaurant inspections and disease tracking to care coordination and health promotion. Behavioral Health Services, Environmental Health and Disease Control, Family Health Services, and Health and Wellness, supported by the Office of Administration, Office of Human Resources and the Office of the Health Officer. This plan emphasizes improving core functions and operations, including protecting the public from health threats, implementing strategies to support healthy living, and maintaining a focus on vulnerable populations, while developing efficient internal processes to support these activities.

Plans and coordinates the daily work activities of subordinate staff such as nurses, therapists, technicians, health aides and clerical support staff.

Coordinates the provision of nursing/medical care services for clients/patients with other agencies/programs.

Provides orientation, on-the-job training and continuing education for staff supervised.

Serves on departmental and interagency committees, task forces, commissions, and boards.

Develops and updates manuals and other instructional material.

Interprets departmental policies and procedures for staff.

Assists staff with determining nursing and mental health care needed by complex patients in crisis situations.

Serves as senior clinician/primary clinical consultant to staff.

Collects, analyzes and interprets program data, submits monthly/ quarterly/annual reports of program activities and accomplishments to program chief or other administrators, contributes to budget development and preparation by providing narrative and statistical information.

Graduation from an accredited school, college, university or an equivalent program with a bachelor's degree in nursing or a related health field.

Three (3) years of post-licensure community health nursing experience.

Two (2) years of supervision of staff or an equivalent combination of experience and training.

Possession of a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland issued by the Maryland State Board of Nurse Examiners at the time of appointment.

Possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle when required for the performance of job-related duties at time of appointment.

5-7 years' experience supervising and training a diverse staff including nurses and social workers.

Meet all training and performance standards and demonstrate proficiency as required by the agency.

Wear and use agency protective apparel and equipment in the performance of their assigned duties.

Be willing and able to serve as an essential employee. Essential employees are expected to report during standard or non-standard hours as operations necessitate, or during emergencies. Essential employees are expected to report or remain at work when other County employees are granted Administrative Leave.
