Ambulatory Care (LPN) Licensed Practical Nurse

Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval determines the award amount (up to $200,000) and the eligibility period (one to five years) after the EDRP application is complete.

Qualifications

United States citizenship.

Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate state agency or accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) at the time of completion.

Acceptable exceptions include military health‑care education or training recognized by the licensing body.

Current GS‑0620 LPN/LVN employee converted under 38 U.S.C. 7401(3) or 7405.

Individual granted a license by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school.

Active, full, current, and unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.

May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees meeting specific criteria.

Grade‑specific requirements:

GS‑03: None beyond the basic requirements.

GS‑04: Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN, or graduation from an approved school plus one year of experience in a nursing care setting.

GS‑05: Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑4 level or equivalent.

GS‑06: Completion of at least one year of additional qualifying experience at the GS‑5 level or equivalent.

Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems.

Ability to work with the RN and/or MD/DO to train less experienced LPNs/LVNs and support staff.

Proficiency in patient education, medication administration, emergency measures, and equipment management.

Prior experience as a preceptor is preferred.

Preferred experience: two years of PACT LPN experience.

The full performance level is GS‑6, but candidates may be selected for grades GS‑3 to GS‑6.

Duties

Perform assigned duties in a manner that promotes quality health care, positive customer service, and a veteran‑centered environment.

Assist with patient care problems and deviations in accordance with VA Nursing Practice and LPN licensure standards.

Maintain knowledge and skill to care for a wide range of patients.

Triage patients prior to provider visits, including nurse visits, telephone triage, and secure messaging.

Serve as a resource for simple or specialized procedures such as non‑complex suture removal, wound care, blood draws, and clinic‑specific procedures.

Perform sterile procedure setup, venipuncture, specimen preparation, and accessioning of labels.

Provide patient education about laboratory tests and related procedures.

Recognize urgent or emergent patient care needs, including hypertension, infections, seizures, and mental health issues.

Takes an active role in health promotion and disease prevention to improve patient outcomes.

Provide one‑on‑one and group teaching as appropriate.

Contribute to interdisciplinary team activities, implementing and evaluating treatment plans.

Perform any other duties assigned for the position.

Benefits and Compensation

Work schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 am-4:00 pm.

Competitive salary with regular increases; higher step rates may be granted when appropriate.

Paid time off: 37-50 days of annual PTO per year (13-26 days leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays).

Parental leave: Up to 12 weeks of paid leave after 12 months of employment for birth, adoption, or foster care placement.

Child care subsidy: Up to 25% of eligible childcare costs for families earning below $144,000, with a monthly maximum of $416.66.
