Genetic Counselor I (Part Time)

Position Summary

Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) Department of OBGYN is excited to announce an opportunity to join Women?s Genetics in a part time role as a clinical genetic counselor at CUIMC. Women?s Genetics includes a team of genetic counselors and coordinators led by a Maternal Fetal Medicine/Geneticist, a research genetic counselor manager, and a clinical genetic counselor manager. Members of Women?s Genetics at Columbia have been at the forefront of discovery and implementation of reproductive genetic technologies for women and their pregnancies. Many of these studies have appeared in leading medical journals, changing obstetrical care and genetics practice.

We are seeking a highly motivated Genetic Counselor to provide excellence in patient care in Obstetrics & Gynecology, supporting our overarching goal to be leaders in the translation of genomic medicine into maternal-fetal and women?s health. Successful candidates will work in a multi-disciplinary manner with other CUIMC providers and have the ability to collaborate effectively as a member of the health care team. This represents a unique opportunity for a genetic counselor interested in both the provision of excellent clinical care and supporting research in the expansion and translation of genomics in women?s health. A successful candidate will operate within an interdisciplinary and intellectual community at CUIMC.

Responsibilities

Under limited supervision, provide reproductive genetic counseling to a diverse group of obstetric and preconception patients referred due to planned PGT-M or complex PGT-A results, family histories of genetic disease, abnormal screening results, fetal anomalies, prior affected pregnancies, and those seeking invasive diagnostic testing (CVS and amniocentesis).

Work as part of a cutting-edge multidisciplinary team including Maternal Fetal Medicine, pediatric specialists, and the Center for Prenatal Pediatrics in the care of patients with fetal anomalies.

Counsel patients on clinical genetic/genomic screens and diagnostic tests.

Coordinate test ordering.

Screen, recruit, and consent eligible patients for reproductive genomic research studies for patients in their clinical care.

Conduct risk assessment based on ultrasound findings, carrier screening and family histories.

Communicate results to patients, families, and referring providers.

Monitor laboratory portals and common emails as assigned.

Present at relevant clinical meetings such as Center for Prenatal Pediatrics and Fetal Sequencing Consortium.

Attend and participate in professional meetings and directed educational opportunities.

Participate in other educational, research, and academic service programs in the Department in accordance with the wishes of the department chair.

Coordination of clinical cross-coverage with genetic counseling team and maintaining appropriate patient follow-up.

Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling.

Board Certification as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum five years experience in the provision of reproductive genetic counseling services.

Ability to work both independently and as part of a genetic counseling team.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team.

Strong organizational skills for patient care tracking and cross-coverage when off-duty.
