Responsible for the entire sequence of cutting and welding operations for a wide variety of repair and fabrication work. May utilize different types of welding systems for different tasks. Maintains a safe work area and may train apprentices in the trade.

Owned by the Marmon Group and Berkshire Hathaway, UTLX headquarters is in Chicago's financial district, close to major public transportation hubs. The employee is responsible for the quality assurance requirements of each task performed.

Welds components related to tank cars including tanks, bolsters, underframes, side sills, etc. Performs welded repairs by utilizing air arc cutting torch and stick or wire welding equipment. Uses hand tools and equipment to chip and grind weld, slag or spatter. Repairs, straightens, removes, reworks car parts, brakes, underframes, center plates, gears, couplers, valves, etc using various hand and power tools. Performs welding and mechanical repairs to tank and hopper cars when required. Have a high school diploma or GED

Must pass the applicable welding test as prescribed by the company.

Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision.

Dependable and reliable to show up for scheduled work shifts including overtime.

Ability to understand and follow UTLX operating procedures and policies based on safety and field training.

Work outdoors and will be exposed to the elements.

Physical effort in lifting and carrying materials and attaching rigging devices. Positions relatively heavy objects by using a forklift or other mechanical means.

Some climbing into and out of vehicles, crane cabs, etc.

Must exercise caution in operation of equipment in confined areas.

Possible exposure to hazardous materials or hazardous waste from leaks or spills of these materials while moving or storing them.
