Maintenance Person Part-time / Full-time

You will serve as a Maintenance Worker with US Fish and Wildlife Service.Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 7, Alaska Peninsula/Becharof National Wildlife Refuge in King Salmon, Alaska. First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the step 1 rate.

Major Duties As a Maintenance Worker (WG-08) your duties may include but are not limited to the following: Building & Facility Maintenance: Maintain multiple buildings and housing units, including basic carpentry, electrical and plumbing tasks, boiler and heating systems, and routine repairs to keep facilities safe and operational-especially during Alaska winters. Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance: Perform scheduled service on refuge vehicles and heavy equipment (oil changes, tire service, minor repairs). Ensure all equipment is operational since local repair resources are limited. Grounds & Small Engine Work: Maintain refuge grounds year-round: mowing, trimming, brush removal, snow removal, and operating equipment such as the motor grader to keep access roads and parking areas clear. Safety, Inventory & Miscellaneous Duties: Conduct safety inspections, maintain fire alarms/extinguishers, manage chemical storage and safety data, track supplies, complete required paperwork, and support the refuge's safety program. Physical Effort: The employee uses considerable physical effort is required in the operation and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and attachments. The employee frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance. Work may be from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, or high places, and in hard-to-reach places. Working Conditions: Work is accomplished both in an office setting (5%) and outdoors (95%). Works outside in all kinds of weather and frequently exposed to running water, fumes, dust, grease, dirt, and moving parts of equipment and machinery. Employee is regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises, falls, falling material, or injury from equipment associated with power equipment or hazardous materials. Work demands conformance to safety requirements including the use of a variety of personal protective equipment such as: protective clothing, hardhats, hearing protection, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, steel toe heavy leather boots, respirator, and other personal protective items. Serious injury may result from getting caught in operating equipment, or from collisions with automobiles when operating on or near public roads. Work is generally done on stable flat terrain and construction sites, but may be also done on rolling hills, minor slopes, grades, rocky or soft ground, or forests.

You must be at least 18 years of age or older to operate government vehicles. You may be required to carry a non-law enforcement firearm as a collateral duty for protection from animals in the backcountry. Probationary as a condition of employment for accepting this position, you may be required to serve a 1-year probationary period to evaluate your fitness and whether your continuation of employment advances the public interest. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated. Upon completion of your probationary your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

Ability to Do the Work of Maintenance Mechanic Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)
