Requirements
Education:
-Graduate from an academic program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), Council on Occupational Education (COE), or other equivalent organization.
Experience:
-One year of experience within the last two years as a Mammography Technologist
Certifications
-Certified by the ARRT Mammography
-BLS
Letter of Recommendations:
-Provide two (2) letters of recommendation written within the
last two (2) years attesting to the HCW's clinical skills. One letter must be from a practicing radiologist or supervisory technologist who has personally observed and evaluated the HCW and who can attest to the HCW's clinical skills in the care of patients. The other letter may be from a clinic or hospital administrator, physician, nurse, or peer technologist who has personal knowledge of the HCW's patient care skills in a similar clinical environment.
Reference letters shall attest to the HCW's communication skills and ability to relate to patients as well as professional and other interpersonal skills among staff members and must include name, title, phone number, date of reference, address and signature of the individual providing reference.
Job Duties
General
Contracted Personnel Duties: Contracted personnel shall
perform a full range of duties consistent with their labor category, education, training, experience, clinical privileges (as applicable), and assigned position. General duties that apply to all personnel or across certain labor categories are given below.
A. Maintain a level of productivity comparable with that of
other individuals performing similar services.
B. Participate in peer review and performance improvement activities.
C. Practice aseptic techniques as necessary. Comply with infection control guidelines to include the proper handling, storage, and disposal of infectious wastes, and the use of universal precautions to prevent the spread of infection.
D. Function with an awareness and application of safety procedures.
E. Perform efficiently in emergency patient situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. Anticipate potential problems/emergencies and make appropriate interventions. Notify supervisor, director, or other designated person regarding problems that the contracted personnel is unable to manage.
F. Apply an awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and strive to manage situations in a reduced risk manner.
G. Participate in the implementation of the Family Advocacy Program as directed. Participation shall include, but not be limited to, appropriate medical examination, documentation, and reporting.
H. Exercise awareness and sensitivity to patient/significant others' rights, as identified within the MTF.
I. Maintain an awareness of responsibility and accountability for own professional practice.
J. Participate in continuing education to meet own professional growth.
K. Attend and/or comply with all annual training classes required by the MTF, to include but not limited to online annual training provided by the MTF: disaster training, infection control, Sexual Harassment, Blood-borne Pathogens, Fire and Safety, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE), MHS Genesis, and all other required training.
L. Actively participate in the MTF's Performance Improvement Program. Participate in meetings to review and evaluate the care provided to patients, identify opportunities to improve the care delivered, and recommend corrective action when problems exist.
M. Participate in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members. Provide training and/or clinical direction as applicable to supporting government employees (e.g., hospital corpsmen, students, etc.).
N. Attend and participate in various meetings as directed.
O. Perform timely, accurate, and concise documentation of patient care (to include all tasks and documentation related to patient encounter in accordance with DHA and MTF policies).
P. Operate and manipulate automated systems such as ADS, Essentris, MHS Genesis, and Clinical Information System (CIS), participate in clinical staff Performance Improvement (PI) and Risk Management (RM) functions, as prescribed by the MTF Director. Maintain DOD email account as directed. The contracted personnel shall be responsive to all email and voicemail communications.
Q. Exercise appropriate clinical delegation of tasks and duties in the clinical direction and coordination of health care team members, patient care, and clinic activities.
R. Maintain documentation of all treatment provided in accordance with clinic directives and prepare such records and reports as may be required. All records and reports must be legible. Abbreviations must be only those listed in local instructions.
REQUIREMENTS:
a. Perform routine and complex mammography examinations using digital or analog equipment to include stereotactic imaging, mammotome procedures and basic ultrasound procedures of the breast.
b. Log arrival and departure of patients in the command's hospital information system (MHS Genesis), mammography record system (MRS) and in the scanner logbooks. Send appropriate image series to the radiologist for reading via the PACS according to department protocol.
c. Receive patients and explain procedures, providing humane and appropriate care and communication to alleviate fear of the examination.
d. Correctly position the patient for the examination and make technical adjustments necessary for the required examination. Determine if any special patient preparation is required.
e. Identify potential abnormalities or normal anatomic variants during the examination and determine the need for additional views of the breasts. Also, recognize anatomic changes created by medical and surgical procedures.
f. Evaluate mammograms or other breast images for technical quality, assuring that proper identification is recorded.
g. Correlate patient's clinical history with the requested examination to be performed and obtain the results of previous pertinent diagnostic tests to correlate with the requested study.
h. Consult with staff physicians from a variety of specialties regarding the patient's pertinent medical history, preliminary diagnosis, and condition so it correlates with the examination.
i. Perform imaging and equipment set up for Sterotactic biopsy and other invasive procedures (with mammographic, stereotactic, ultrasound, and/or MRI guidance) and assist radiologist with the set up and verification of biopsy and location.
j. Label specimens that are collected during mammography biopsies that need to be evaluated by laboratory/pathology. Image specimens brought from the operating room to confirm marker location.
k. Maintain and clean the mammography equipment on a regular basis in accordance with Radiology Department procedures and protocols.
l. Perform mammography system and mammography radiology reading workstation equipment calibrations and quality control tasks according to FDA, American College of Radiology (ACR), manufacturer, DHA, Joint Commission, and command instructions daily and/or as prescribed by Department authority. Recognize artifacts and equipment errors and notify designated Government personnel (i.e. Medical Physicist) of outlying values.
m. Initiate repair call procedures for equipment malfunctions by notifying designated Government personnel. Report problems to the Biomedical Repair Section and record the problem condition in the trouble call logbook. Report problems to Department Qualified Medical Physicists.
n. Differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes and recognize equipment limitations. Program the examination, set up the machine and techniques to be used per established protocols.
o. Observe and report to the radiologist any symptoms which have direct bearing on the patient's condition as a result of adverse reaction to contrast media or as part of invasive procedures and inform the radiologist of any condition requiring his/her attention. Recognize the need for and initiate emergency measures for critical situations such as respiratory or cardiac arrest.
p. Stock and maintain an adequate level of supplies required for various mammography examinations or procedures, also cleaning, taking out linen and sharps containers to Biohazard room as needed. Participate in the radiology department's rotation for pick up and drop off of both.
q. Perform any administrative or technical task pertaining to maintaining FDA (Federal Drug Administration), MQSA (Mammography Quality Standards Act) accreditation, and ACR accreditation; to include but not limited to MRS documentation (eg, Birads, rad path, unresolved study list, etc) and Quality Control documentation.
r. Start and complete exams in MHS Genesis and reconcile past due encounter list.
s. In the absence of a front desk clerk, may be required to perform administrative duties related to scheduling patients and calling patients with appointment times.
t. Document patient complaints and share them with the government supervisor for appropriate action.
u. Perform and document transitions of care and other shift change huddles/meetings at the beginning and end of shift in accordance with MTF and Joint Commission requirements.
v. Maintain documentation of continuing experience and training for mammography technologists in accordance with FDA MQSA requirements. Provide documentation to the Lead Interpreting Physician per Department policy.
