Electrical Power Engineering

Zachry Engineering Corporation (ZEC) is currently looking for a talented and self‑motivated Senior Electrical Engineer to join our Downers Grove Design Center. This is a great opportunity under the direction and guidance from the department manager to get involved and assist in the planning, design, development and leading of Electrical Engineering projects in the Power/Energy Industrial Markets.

Involved in application of general design practices. Will select and recommend procedures in design and lead a team to implement those designs for installation. Performs non‑routine and complex assignments involving responsibility for planning and conducting a complete project of various scopes. The lead shall have the ability to select and adapt plans, techniques, designs, and coordinate the work with the project team. The position’s skills are heavily focused on electrical design and execution while having working technical knowledge of other discipline design requirements. Position requires the ability to lead and coordinate work efforts within the discipline project team to successfully complete project assignments.

Lead a team of Electrical Engineers and designers

Work on a major project or several projects of moderate scope with complex designs.

Independently performs assignments with instructions as to the overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters.

Maintain liaisons with individuals and units within or outside the organization, with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters pertaining to related field.

Provide recommendations for purchase of electrical system components.

Examine electrical drawings for completeness, detail, and accuracy as peer reviewer.

Check manufacturer’s deliverables and coordinate between these and Zachry Engineering drawings.

Be competent with standard server software applications such as e‑mail, spreadsheet, word processing, database, etc.; familiar with CADD applications.

Assure the company quality assurance procedures are followed in completion of assigned tasks.

Assign and schedule tasks to and direct engineers, designers, and administrative staff to meet project schedules.

Knowledge of electrical codes and standards (e.g., Electrical calculations & studies including, but not limited to: feeder sizing, electrical equipment sizing, voltage drop, short circuit analysis, load flow, protective device (breakers / relays) coordination studies, arc flash analysis and grounding.

One‑line diagrams including metering & relaying for low, medium and high‑voltage electrical systems.

Schematic diagrams for low, medium, and high voltage electrical equipment / systems

Electrical raceway design including underground ductbanks, cable tray and conduit systems.

Lighting design including interior, exterior and roadway lighting, and lighting panel schedules.

Electrical lists & schedules including load list, electrical equipment list, and cable schedules.

Electrical general arrangements/equipment layouts

Understanding of electrical construction methods and materials

Equipment procurement including equipment specifications, bid evaluation, vendor drawing review.

Cost estimating and material takeoffs.

Proposal process including development of project scopes, budgets, and schedules.

Field engineering/construction support

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering discipline from an accredited engineering program.

15+ years of experience working as an Electrical Engineer for Combined Cycle Power Plants.

Experience using SKM and/or ETAP is highly preferable for Electrical System Analysis and Relay Coordination.

Experience with Switchyards, Large Power Transformers, Generator Circuit Breakers, and other large power equipment.

Prior experience with the procurement of electrical equipment such as transformers, breakers, switchgears, cables, etc.

Employee will be required to communicate in person, via telephone, video conferencing, email, oral expression, and comprehension. Employee will work primarily in an office but may also work in other environments including warehouse and in a trailer or building on construction sites. On construction sites, noise levels will be moderate to high. Job sites may include light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment and tools, people standing, walking, sitting, signaling, and talking. The above description covers the fundamental responsibilities of the Senior Electrical Engineer position. Electrical Engineer is between $148,500 and $211,830, annually.
