The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Legal Assistant 1 in the Social & Health Services Olympia (SHO). Legal Assistant 1 (Range 42) salary range: $45,924 - $61,332 Annually (Effective 7/1/2026) The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Our cases range from large federal court class action cases to individual administrative appeals. We also handle a wide range of legal matters, including:
Seeking protections for vulnerable adults at risk of abuse or neglect;
Defending lawsuits brought by legal advocacy groups organizations on behalf of Medicaid recipients and individuals with disabilities;
Complex civil rights challenges by residents of the Special Commitment Center for sexually violent predators;
Civil and felony commitment hearings and trials;
Contract disputes with medical providers and managed care organizations; Appeals related to eligibility for medical services.

Duties and Essential Functions of a Legal Assistant 1
Provide litigation support to Assistant Attorneys General (AAGs) and Paralegals throughout the lifecycle of legal matters.
Prepare routine legal documents and assist with court filings, service, and case management activities.
Support trial and hearing preparation through document organization and exhibit management.
Provide administrative support to the division by serving as a cross‑trained backup for the Division Legal Office Assistant and Administrative Assistant 4.
Contribute to the efficient operation of the division through collaboration, customer service, and administrative support.
Open new legal matters by reviewing case documents, entering case information into the case management system, and establishing electronic case files.
Prepare routine legal documents, pleadings, correspondence, notices, subpoenas, certificates of service, and related materials under attorney or paralegal direction.
Monitor court dockets and case management systems to ensure case information is accurate, deadlines are tracked, and litigation progresses appropriately.
Prepare and organize legal documents, exhibits, and notebooks for hearings, motions, discovery, and trial.
File, serve, mail, and archive legal documents in accordance with court rules, agency policy, and records retention requirements.
Answer and route telephone calls, receive and distribute mail, monitor shared inboxes, and provide excellent customer service to attorneys, clients, courts, agencies, and the public.
Process purchasing documents, invoices, vouchers, travel arrangements, and other administrative requests in accordance with agency procedures.
Assist with recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, and administrative projects to support division operations.
Provide cross‑trained backup support for the Division Legal Office Assistant and Administrative Assistant 4 to ensure continuity of operations during planned and unplanned absences.
Maintain confidentiality while exercising sound judgment, professionalism, and attention to detail in handling sensitive legal and personnel information.
Collaborate effectively with attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, and administrative staff to support the division's mission.
Option 1: High School diploma or equivalent and two years of clerical experience including a minimum of one year of experience in a legal environment;
Option 2: Two years of legal office experience;
A two year degree in Legal Secretary Studies, Paralegal studies or related field of study.
Technology Skills – Use personal computers and software programs such as word processing, databases, spreadsheets and other litigation support software products to produce timely and accurate work products that fully satisfies the demands of an assignment.
Ability to produce supporting documents - Focuses on results in supporting/assisting one or more attorneys and paralegals by providing clerical services in producing letters, notices, basic pleadings, and reports.
Read, comprehend, and retain information - Accurately reads, interprets, understands and retains information from written materials or instructions; ability to correct inaccuracies in punctuation, spelling or language; ability to discern intended meaning of main items or messages of document and place in context.
Workload management - Effectively handles and organizes multiple assignments and competing priorities and urgent situations, making sound decisions to produce accurate work product thoroughly and on time.
Communicate effectively – Consistently complies with accepted rules of English grammar and composition; able to translate information through written and verbal language, including e‑mail, into understandable messages for intended receiver; About the Washington State Office of the Attorney General
