Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Public Policy is an interdisciplinary academic unit which educates undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students with the theoretical perspective, analytical skill, and substantive knowledge needed to respond to major domestic and global policy problems. The research assistant will work with a research team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a project supported by the Student Upward Mobility Initiative (SUMI) at the Urban Institute. Using rich longitudinal data from a large school district in North Carolina, the project will explore the relationship between several core socioemotional competencies and students' long-term mobility outcomes, including college enrollment, employment, and earnings.
The position will be fully grant funded and the candidate will partner closely with the principal investigators to manage and conduct research activities in accordance with the project objectives and timelines. The incumbent will be actively involved with all aspects of preparing and analyzing quantitative and survey data. These responsibilities include processing and cleaning datasets, building analysis datasets, and performing descriptive and inferential analyses. The incumbent will also be responsible for participating in project development (e.g., specifying analyses), helping manage various aspects of quantitative projects (e.g., IRB submissions, grant reports, providing support to other research team members), and assisting with the creation of project deliverables, including presentations, briefs, and journal articles.
The candidate will be expected to use Stata, MS Office, and UNC customized systems and tools. The initial length of employment is 9 months, with the opportunity for a 1-year extension based on performance.
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Coordinate among PIs and other research team members.
A background in the field of education research and/or experience with the NC education system.
