Deputy Sheriff - Field Operations

$29.00/hour or $60,324.58 with no prior road patrol experience. 1:1 credit given for years of VA DCJS road patrol Law Enforcement service up to 10 years or 50%, whichever is greater. Full salary range for this career is $60,324.58 - $110,638.11. Additional compensation may be earned via shift schedule, night differential, holiday and premium pay. Responsibilities Perform responsible protective service work in the Sheriff’s Office involving a variety of general or support duty assignments and an element of personal danger. Must be available to work any shift of the day on any day of the week, including holidays and weekends. Field Operations Deputies work an assigned 11.5‑hour shift (0530-1700; 1500-0230; 1830-0600) rotating on/off duty in a 3 on >2 off >2 on >3 off pattern. Enforcing laws; investigating criminal activity; serving civil papers; ensuring safety of public; testifying in Court; maintaining records and files; preparing reports. Operate a patrol vehicle to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order. Respond to radio dispatches and answer calls and complaints. Make arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints. Subdue resisting suspects using weapons, maneuvers and other approved self‑defense methods. Enforce traffic laws; issue citations for traffic violations. Fill out arrest records; take fingerprints and photographs; perform prisoner security functions; investigate traffic accidents. Interview victims and witnesses; secure property and evidence. Prepare detailed reports on activities and assignments. Serve civil process and criminal arrest warrants. Perform a variety of crime prevention duties; may serve as DARE officer or other special assignments. Perform various inmate jail and court security duties; enforce jail rules and regulations; supervise trustees; transport inmates to and from court. Perform related tasks as required. Position is essential and must report to work during times when local government agencies are closed; subject to call‑back and hold‑over to maintain minimum staffing 24/7. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalency (GED) required. Valid driver’s license required. Required to be a United States citizen. Must be at least 21 years of age prior to academy graduation. Must obtain and maintain all Stafford County Sheriff’s Office and State Criminal Justice System training and education requirements for the position. Must possess all qualifications as required by the Code of Virginia, the Department of Criminal Justice Services, and the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office. Special Requirements Must reside in the Commonwealth of Virginia and be in possession of a valid VA driver’s license within 60 days of establishing residency. Physical Requirements This position requires the exertion of up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; lifting or dragging short distances of approximately 165 pounds occasionally; climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grappling, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas; hearing and visual acuity are required for tasks listed. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may need to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
