Associate Veterinarian - Part Time

Job Overview We are seeking a veterinarian to lead and perform full-service care at our Vetco Total Care hospital. The position involves diagnosing and treating patients, performing surgeries and dental procedures, documenting care, collaborating with staff, and communicating with clients. Essential Job Functions Perform physical examinations, diagnose and treat diseases, and provide preventive care based on patient signalment, lifestyle, and environment. Use a problem‑based approach: develop a comprehensive problem list, differential diagnoses, diagnostic plan, and appropriate treatments for each patient. Document all patient observations, exam findings, diagnostics, treatments, medications, client interactions, and diagnoses in the medical record. Perform routine and complex surgical procedures, including spays, neuters, abdominal exploratory surgeries, and mass removals. Perform routine and complex dental procedures, including full dental examinations, evaluation of radiographs, extractions, and oral surgeries. Develop treatment plans for patients requiring day hospitalization, transition patients to overnight care as needed, and coordinate with referral hospitals to ensure continuity of care. Other Duties and Responsibilities Participate in rounds as incoming or outgoing doctor at the beginning and end of shifts. Disseminate knowledge to improve the level of care and communication among staff, patients, and clients. Perform additional duties as assigned. Nature of Supervision The veterinarian reports to the Hospital Medical Leader or Area Medical Director for patient care decisions. The veteran is expected to comply with Petco Veterinary SOPs and accept guidance from leadership. Planning and Problem Solving Excellent problem‑solving skills are essential to enable timely diagnosis of patient problems. Supervisory Responsibility There are no direct supervisory responsibilities; however, the veterinarian serves as a de‑facto leader within the hospital. Education / Experience Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an AVMA‑accredited veterinary school. Active licensure as a veterinarian in the state of the hospital, or ability to obtain licensure by start date (no contingencies). Current DEA license. Current Controlled Substance License in the state of the hospital, or ability to obtain by start date. USDA Category I accreditation (minimum) or completion within two months of hire. Comfortable performing anesthesia, routine surgeries, and dental procedures (spays, neuters, mass removals, and various dentals). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Compassionate and professional demeanor during emotional and stressful situations. Proficient with telephone and computer usage. Team player willing to learn new techniques, propose ideas, and embrace change. Work Environment Most duties are performed in the veterinary full‑service hospital, involving bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and extended periods of standing. The role requires direct contact with clients and their pets. Contacts The position communicates regularly with clients, veterinary specialists, and service providers. Salary Range Hourly: $55.50 - $88.50. Final rate depends on location, experience, and applicable wage laws.
