Certified Poison Information Specialist - North Texas Poison Center

Location: New Parkland Hospital Primary Purpose
- Serves as a resource to health professionals and the public by providing professional and technical assistance regarding potential poisonings and conducting educational and research projects to ensure Poison Center operations meets regulatory requirements and the needs of users.
- Must have a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy or Pharm.D. degree from an accredited school of Pharmacy; OR,
- Must be a graduate of an accredited school of Nursing; OR,
- Must have a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from an approved college of Medicine/Osteopathy.
- Must have minimum *12 months of experience as a certified Poison Information Specialist. *Internal staff may eligible to promote into the role at entry level upon receipt of the certification.
- May have an equivalent combination of education or experience in lieu of specific education and/or experience as stated above.
- Must have and maintain a current American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) Poison Information Specialist certification.
- Must be a Registered Pharmacist in the State of Texas or become registered within 90 days of hire
- Must have and maintain a current American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) Poison Information Specialist certification.
- Must have current RN license or valid temporary permit with the Texas Board of Nursing, or valid Compact RN license.
- Must have and maintain a current American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) Poison Information Specialist certification.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge involved with poison information services.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of nursing standards.
- Must be able to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
- Must be able to understand and interpret poison information to health professionals and the public.
- Must be able to perform mathematical computations.
- Must be able to employ effective problem solving and demonstrate effective interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to demonstrate patient-centered/patient-related behaviors.
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to serve as a preceptor with any new poison specialists hired into the department
- Must be able to prepare and conduct in-service educational programs..
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill to operate a computer to input and extract information using data base management software.
- Must be able to work rotating shifts.
- RN's Only: Must demonstrate ability to provide care to assigned patient population in accordance with the current State of Texas Nursing Practice Act, established protocols, multidisciplinary plan of care, and clinical area specific standards.
- Serves as a resource to the public and health professionals related to potential poisonings by answering calls and providing consultation to include information, direction, and assistance concerning analytical toxicology, emergency and critical care and extracorporeal capabilities within the region. Ensures procedures meet the criteria established by the American Association of Poison Control Centers.
- Coordinates poison services, performs referral services, identification, treatment, assessment and charting activities, conducts analysis, calculates patients' toxicity level and performs follow-up calls. Maintains documentation and records and prepares reports. Ensure services meet North Texas Poison Center (NTPC) policies and procedures.
- Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements and trends in poison information by attending seminars and workshops, reading professional journals and/or maintaining licensure/registration with Texas State Board for profession. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
- Participates in data and research projects on a monthly basis. Exercises responsibility for project performance and accountability for progress; and/or personally performs advanced scientific and medical research work, suggesting modifications to, or improvements in, design of research projects, presenting original ideas for follow-up studies, and recommending utilization of new or revised techniques and procedures to obtain desired results.
- Participates in call monitoring and performance improvement initiatives on a monthly basis to ensure the poison center is operating effectively.
- Serves as a preceptor or trainer to newer staff members.
- Prepares and conducts an inservice educational program for the assigned department, at least once per year.
- Identifies and analyzes the design of jobs, work processes, work flows, etc. for the NTPC and implements appropriate changes to improve effectiveness, productivity, efficiency and recommending annual goals and objectives that support the overall goals of NTPC.
- Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Poison Information area. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
- Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
- Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
- Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
