Role Description The Sous Chef is a full-time, on-site role based at Surf & Sand Laguna Beach in Laguna Beach, CA. This role supports the Executive Chef in overseeing daily kitchen operations, including food preparation, cooking, plating, and quality control of all menu items. The Sous Chef leads and trains kitchen team members, helps manage scheduling, and ensures adherence to food safety, sanitation, and health standards. Responsibilities include collaborating on menu development, monitoring inventory and ordering, managing food costs, and maintaining a clean, efficient, and organized kitchen. The Sous Chef actively participates in service, works closely with front-of-house teams to deliver a seamless guest experience, and helps uphold the resort’s standards of coastal cuisine and presentation. Qualifications Culinary expertise in high-volume or fine dining environments, with strong skills in cooking techniques, food preparation, and plating. Leadership and team management abilities, including staff training, mentoring, and effective communication across kitchen and service teams. Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and health regulations, with a commitment to maintaining a safe and compliant kitchen environment. Experience with menu planning, inventory control, and basic cost management to support efficient, quality-focused operations. Ability to work on-site in Laguna Beach, CA, with flexibility for weekends, holidays, and varied shifts typical of hospitality operations. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform in a fast-paced, guest-focused setting. Formal culinary education or equivalent professional kitchen experience; ServSafe or similar food handling certification preferred.
