Director of Development, Arizona

Overview The Director of Development directs all aspects of one or more development functions, securing significant financial resources to support conservation goals in Arizona and the Western United States and Canada Division. Responsibilities include designing, developing, and managing strategic plans, leading major donor interactions, overseeing a staff of 8–11, and leading large fundraising campaigns. Responsibilities and Scope Provide high‑level leadership and support for the Chapter’s Development programs (approx. 65% of time). Lead and mentor the Development team, overseeing hiring, coaching, training, performance and workload management. Develop and implement a Development program strategy aligned with Chapter strategic plans, manage a portfolio of major donors, set annual work plans, and monitor benchmarks and measures of success. Serve as a critical member of the Chapter Leadership Team, coordinate with partners across the Western US and Canada Division, and advise the State Director on opportunities and challenges. Complete essential administrative functions, including timecards, expense reports, performance evaluations, and staff documentation (approx. 5%). Perform miscellaneous duties such as liaison to the Arizona Board of Trustees’ Development and Finance Committees. Lead a $60‑plus‑million campaign launching in 2027, working with the State Director and volunteer leadership, and oversee trustee relationships. Ensure compliance with TNC policies, financial standards, legal requirements, and the Auto Safety Program; maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Travel up to 20% within Arizona, some U.S., and occasional long hours. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience, including senior‑level roles. Experience cultivating, soliciting, and closing major gifts. Experience building and maintaining long‑term relationships with major donors, foundations, and corporations. Experience planning and delivering budgetary responsibilities. Experience managing and supervising a multidisciplinary team. Experience working in a large, complex, non‑profit environment. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, web browsers, and a CRM database. Valid driver’s license and compliance with TNC’s Auto Safety Program; employees may not drive high‑risk drivers in Conservancy‑owned, leased, or rental vehicles. Desired Qualifications 10+ years of high‑level fundraising experience. Experience closing 6‑ to 7‑figure gifts. Extensive management experience, including motivating and coaching a large multidisciplinary team. Experience working closely with nonprofit boards, recruiting and onboarding members. Expert knowledge of major gift giving trends, solicitation, and capital campaigns. Proven success in asking for and closing major gifts and building relationships. Understanding of charitable gift planning and advanced gift planning concepts. Superb communication and presentation skills. Relationship‑building and business cultivation expertise. Advanced knowledge of fundraising and non‑profit best practices. Multilingual skills and cross‑cultural experience appreciated. Science background helpful. Prior experience in a large complex institution or nonprofit. Proficiency in synthesizing materials from multiple sources. Salary Information The starting pay range for this position is $157,000 – $180,000. This range applies to candidates located in the USA; international candidates will receive a local market‑adjusted range.
