Business Development Representative

Position Summary

The Business Development Representative (BDR) is responsible for growing Avalon's census by building and maintaining referral relationships throughout the community. This role works in the field, meeting with hospitals, outpatient providers, courts, and other referral sources, to generate a consistent, steady flow of qualified admissions to both the detox and residential programs. 

Key Responsibilities

● Develop and maintain referral relationships with hospitals and emergency departments, outpatient behavioral health providers, primary care practices, EAPs, drug courts, probation/parole offices, law enforcement, sober living homes, and other community partners.

● Conduct regular face-to-face meetings and site visits with referral sources across the service area.

● Represent Avalon at community events, health fairs, and relevant conferences.

● Respond promptly to referral inquiries and coordinate closely with the admissions/intake team for fast, warm hand-offs.

● Log outreach activity and referral pipeline consistently (contacts made, meetings held, referrals received, intakes closed).

● Provide regular reporting to the Executive Director on referral activity, pipeline status, and progress toward intake goals.

● Send periodic outcome updates to referral partners to build trust and encourage repeat referrals.

● Maintain current knowledge of Avalon's programs, admission criteria, and payer/insurance acceptance to represent services accurately.

● Conduct all outreach and referral activity in compliance with applicable law, including anti-kickback and patient-brokering statutes (e.g., EKRA) relationship-building and education only, never payment for referrals.

Qualifications

● Prior experience in behavioral health or addiction treatment business development, admissions, or related healthcare outreach/sales required.

● Established referral relationships within Avalon's local service area strongly preferred.

● Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel daily throughout the service area.

● Strong interpersonal, relationship-building, and verbal communication skills.

● Working knowledge of the substance use disorder treatment continuum and payer landscape a plus.

● Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
