Sterile Processing Technician

The Sterile Processing Instrument Technician, under general supervision follows robust processes in decontamination, processing, and sterilization by cleaning instruments and equipment, ensuring that all items are free of any bioburden, inspecting, functioning testing, and assembling instruments and equipment for high‑level disinfection or sterilization. The technician always follows the manufacturer’s instructions for use in decontamination, processing, high‑level disinfection, and sterilization as well as department and hospital processes and policies. The technician must accurately maintain the required documentation on written logs and/or computer systems. Documentation includes processes in decontamination, processing, high‑level disinfection or sterilization as well as sterile processing department equipment. The technician must be able to prioritize instrumentation for processing, answer telephones, and dispatch instrumentation, equipment, and supplies. The technician performs duties in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy service standards. Performs other duties as assigned. Position Details Mercy STL Hospital Sterile Processing Tech, PRN Qualifications Education: High school graduate or equivalent Other: Basic computer skills Overview The decontamination process involves disassembly of instrumentation, robust manual cleaning with multiple steps and various cleaning agents, as well as the use of ultrasonic and washer disinfectors. Prepare instrumentation for use by inspecting, function testing, and assembling, labeling, and preparing for sterilization. Equipment is also assembled and/or disassembled for use such as cords rolled neatly and/or other equipment separated into components. Knows the name of all general surgical instruments and has a general knowledge of their use. Knows specialty instruments and can assemble and prepare specialty items. Key Responsibilities Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). Must interact with staff and co‑workers across a diverse range of disciplines. Must be able to follow directions. Must be able to operate equipment.
