Fiber Technician II

Overview The Technician II - Fiber is responsible for all aspects of fiber work, including installing, terminating, testing, and splicing. Job Duties and Responsibilities Install a work area outlet for the floor, modular furniture, and wall; terminate CAT 3 & CAT 5 jacks; mount faceplates and surface mount boxes; adhere to labeling standards. Build closets: mount and install backboards, cross-connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optic hardware; install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required. Complete all IDC connections (e.g., terminate 110/66 blocks and patch panels). Test fiber runs: perform horizontal and riser cable continuity tests; use a volt-ohmmeter; troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs. Install connectors (LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, MPO/MTP) for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber. Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords. Terminate and breakout outside plant (loose tube) fiber (e.g., Corning/Commscope, 3DNX). Terminate indoor tight-buffered multimode and single-mode fiber. Install fan-out kits including buffer tube. Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards for multimode and single-mode fiber. Complete IES paperwork accurately and on time (timesheets, material transfers, work orders, change orders, Job Blog, tool transfers, and others as required). Testing: use OTDR and Fluke DTX 180; troubleshoot with OTDR to identify and correct problems end-to-end and network-wide. Splicing: perform mechanical splicing and fusion splicing for all types of fiber; build entrances, maintenance spaces, and direct-buried splices. Other duties as assigned. Compensation: USD $25.00–$32.00 per hour. Qualifications Physical and Mental Requirements Self-motivated, positive in approach, professional; able to contribute to project process improvements and promote company culture. Proficient with listed tools; able to act as a company liaison with customers; strong problem-solving, critical thinking, reading, writing, and oral presentation skills. Ability to work at heights, on ladders, and in confined spaces; lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds; stand and walk on large job sites. Ability to see color differences, read small print, and hear audible signals (dial tones). Willingness and ability to travel within the branch or regional territory as needed; regular attendance required. Education, Certification, License, and Skill Requirements: High School diploma or GED equivalence. Proficiency with listed tools and termination methods for SMF and MMF systems (Unicam, anaerobic, heat-cure). Testing & troubleshooting MMF & SMF systems (OTDR & PMLS). Ability to meet IES driving standards policy. Preferred: 5–7 years of fiber experience; industry certifications (Corning/FOA); data center installation experience; mechanical and fusion splicing experience; OSP/confined space entry experience. Required tools include: screwdriver (regular and Phillips), drywall saw, torpedo level, tape measure, snips, pliers, hammer, wrench set, cable stripper, flashlight, gloves; punch tool with 110/66 block blades; 6/8 position combo crimp tool; Krone/3M/BIX.
