This role focuses on fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment where all students feel valued, supported, and heard. Key responsibilities include advocating for first-generation students by connecting them with wraparound support services and campus resources, building rapport through regular outreach and progress monitoring, and leading workshops, events, and tabling efforts that promote student engagement and the Wedum Center for Student Success. This position also involves partnering with faculty, advisors, and campus departments to coordinate comprehensive support, and developing retention and completion strategies tailored to student needs. As an advocate for first-generation students, this role helps cultivate a sense of belonging by creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive space where students feel encouraged to express their needs and access the resources necessary for their success. Master’s degree may substitute for 18 months of related experience; Bachelor’s degree may substitute for one year of experience; Associates degree may substitute for six months of experience Experience supporting students in their academic journey, particularly in areas of transition and success. Strong communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills. Ability to take initiative in leading projects and initiatives independently, while also partnering and collaborating effectively with colleagues, students, and community partners. Ability to apply equity-minded practices to support the academic success and engagement of students from diverse backgrounds and with varied abilities and interests. Physical Requirements The essential physical functions of this position must be performed with or without reasonable accommodations: Ability to maintain a stationary position for long periods of time while performing computer‑based tasks. Ability to operate a computer keyboard, and other standard office equipment with precision. Ability to engage in tasks that require reviewing information on a screen or in written financial documents for sustained periods Ability to move about the campus to access equipment, or meet with colleagues. Ability to occasionally transport, or move files, office materials, or equipment weighing up to 10 pounds from various heights. Ability to organize and handle documents that may require reaching, bending, or light filing. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in education, student development, psychology, sociology, counseling or a related field. Experience working with or a strong understanding of the challenges faced by first-generation college students. Experience developing and leading workshops, staffing tabling events, or conducting proactive student outreach effectively, with a demonstrated ability to initiate conversations and build connections with students and others. Experience tracking and interpreting data relevant to their work and using that information for work and process improvement Experience developing and sustaining productive collaborative relationships with colleagues (faculty and staff) in support of student success Demonstrates the ability to build strong rapport, establish trust, and inspire joy and purpose in their work with students Bilingual/multilingual in Spanish, Somali, French, Hmong, or other languages that reflect our student body, workforce, and communities.
