Employee Benefits Associate

A leading global law firm is seeking a highly skilled Associate or Counsel to join its Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation practice, based in New York or Washington, D.C., with remote flexibility available for the right candidate. This is an excellent opportunity to advise on complex health and welfare benefit matters, working with high-profile clients across both transactional and advisory contexts, including M&A.
This role is open to candidates across mid-level to senior experience, offering flexibility in seniority, responsibilities, and even working arrangements, including part-time or reduced hours schedules.
Responsibilities:
- Advise clients on a broad range of employee benefits and executive compensation matters
- Provide guidance on health & welfare plans, including medical, disability, life, and fringe benefit plans
- Advise on flexible spending accounts (FSAs), health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs), cafeteria plans, and health savings accounts (HSAs)
- Support M&A transactions by conducting benefits due diligence and advising on structuring and integration
- Offer ongoing counseling on compliance and regulatory matters
- Draft, review, and negotiate plan documents and related materials
- Work closely with corporate and tax teams on cross-disciplinary matters
- Manage multiple client engagements and deadlines effectively
Qualifications:
- J.D. with strong academic credentials
- 4–6 years’ experience for Associate level; 8+ years’ experience for Counsel level
- Significant experience advising on health and welfare benefit plans
- Experience in both transactional (M&A) and general advisory/counseling matters
- Strong drafting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
- Proven ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
- Admission to practice in the relevant jurisdiction (NY or DC preferred)

- Associate: $320,000 – $440,000
- Counsel: $300,000 – $450,000
