Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Associate (DC)

Summary DLA Piper is seeking an associate to join its Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation group. The position focuses on executive compensation and employee benefits law, including equity plans, executive retention packages, retirement and welfare plans, and employee benefit plans in M&A transactions. The role is open to Washington D.C. office candidates who possess strong analytical and writing skills, attention to detail, sound business judgment, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively and independently. Responsibilities Responsibilities as an Associate will vary based on level of experience and specific practice group. Conduct thorough legal research and analysis to support case/transaction preparation. Draft well‑written, error‑free, reasoned legal documents including briefs, motions, contracts, and correspondence. Assist or manage complex cases/transactions from inception to resolution, including preparing for trials, negotiations, settlements, closings, and other legal activities while demonstrating strong judgement. Maintain client relationships by providing support, regular updates, advice, and addressing concerns promptly and professionally. Collaborate with other lawyers and business professionals to develop innovative strategies that achieve favourable outcomes for clients. Attend, support, and participate in high‑level legal activities such as hearings, depositions, negotiations, and trials. Ensure compliance with legal standards and regulations, staying abreast of changes in law and precedents. Proactively seek training and development opportunities to enhance legal knowledge, technology, management, and leadership skills. Engage in firm programs, civic and professional organizations, and pro‑bono work that supports underserved communities. Desired Skills Excellent written and verbal communication; strong research, analytical, and problem‑solving skills; attention to detail; good business and professional judgement; excellent organisational skills; ability to work collaboratively and independently; conceptual thinking; persuasive communication; management skills. Minimum Education JD from an accredited law school. Certifications Admitted to practice in the District of Columbia. Minimum Years of Experience 2 years of direct and applicable AmLaw 100 firm experience preferred. Essential Job Expectations Effectively communicate verbally and in writing with clients, lawyers, business professionals, and third parties. Produce deliverables, answer phone calls, and reply to correspondence efficiently. Provide timely, accurate, and quality work product. Meet deadlines and perform required duties within expectations. Foster positive work relationships. Comply with firm policies and practices. Engage in both physical and sedentary activity, including work at a computer, virtual conference calls, and meetings as needed. Work under pressure and manage competing demands in a fast‑paced environment. Perform any other duties, tasks, or projects as assigned. Physical Demands Predominantly sedentary work; occasional lifting or moving of up to 10 pounds. Work Environment Hybrid: regular in‑office presence with flexibility for work‑from‑home. Pay and Benefits The expected hiring range is $225,000 – $260,000 per year, depending on geographic location. Compensation is also determined by experience, skills, education, and overall qualifications. Benefits include medical, dental, vision insurance and a 401(k) plan.
