Building Maintenance Specialist (Part-Time) Date Requested: September 10, 2026 Date Needed: ASAP $18.00 - $24.00 per hour DOQ The Building Maintenance Specialist is responsible for performing basic building and property maintenance tasks in the Police Department in order to prevent major breakdowns and delays within the City of Hammond, and all other duties as assigned. E s s e n ti al D u t i es a n d R e s p o n s i b i l i ti e s Du t i es i nc l u d e, b u t a r e n o t li m i t e d t o : Inspects the condition of buildings and properties assigned to the Police Department and determines if alterations or repairs are needed. Performs basic building and property maintenance tasks, e.g., mechanical, electrical, plumbing, construction, painting, etc., in order to prevent major breakdowns and delays, and to improve the cosmetics of the building and property. Assists the Police Lieutenant in determining when to hire outside contractors, architects, and engineers to complete maintenance work. Supervises the vendors who provide preventative and general maintenance of HVAC, mechanical equipment, and buildings. Conducts routine maintenance on the HVAC and boiler systems by replacing filters, belts, and general cleaning. Changes ballasts, lights, receptacles, and completes minor electrical repairs in all buildings. Mows the lawn, pulls weeds, and trims bushes and trees, as needed. Performs snow removal and salt applications on Police Department assigned properties to include: the parking lots, sidewalks, etc., as needed. Changes oil and conducts other routine maintenance tasks on equipment, as needed. Picks-up trash around and in buildings and on the property, as needed. Moves file cabinets, desks, and other furniture, as needed. Hangs pictures, poster boards, and other related office equipment, as needed. Loads and unloads trucks, as needed. Documents all routine and preventative maintenance tasks performed. Communicates with and between all city offices/departments, and the Police Lieutenant, as needed. Attends all meetings, conferences, training sessions, etc., as required by the City of Hammond and the department. E d u c a ti on a n d / or E x p e r i e n c e High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required; and an Associate’s Degree (A.A.) from a university or vocational college in building maintenance, mechanical engineering, construction, or related field is desired; and one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Previous building maintenance, construction, or engineering experience in a municipality or government-related job is required. A working knowledge of the geography of the City of Hammond is required. The knowledge of basic mathematical skills is required. A basic understanding and knowledge of preventative and general building maintenance and construction tasks as they relate to electrical, plumbing, and HVAC is required. A basic understanding in the use of and knowledge of preventative and general maintenance with equipment to include: various hand and power tools, and vehicles is required. The ability to document routine and maintenance activities in a concise and thorough manner while paying attention to detail is required. A basic knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) rules and regulations with regards to material safety data sheets (MSDSs), bloodborne safety, lock‑out tag‑out, proper lifting, the proper use of tools and machinery, etc. and the safety of employees in the department is required. The ability to make proper measurements for the purchasing and installing of building materials is required. A basic knowledge of AC and DC voltage, the National Electrical Code and how to operate and understand various electrical test equipment is required. A basic knowledge of all municipal operations within the City of Hammond is required. A working knowledge of Police Department policies, procedures, standards, internal controls, and work methods is required. Familiarity with government agencies, consultants, contractors, and vendors associated with the Police Department is required. The ability to maintain and cultivate positive relationships with the public, vendors and other City of Hammond departments is required. The ability to make sound and rational decisions including exercising independent judgment within established protocols and guidelines is required. The ability to access and determine a problem and come up with a sound rational conclusion or solution in a maintenance or construction‑related environment is required. The ability to multi‑task and work in a fast paced environment while providing exceptional customer service is required.
