Must Haves

Doctorate (DVM or equivalent) in Veterinary Medicine
Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States (or eligible); Louisiana preferred
Diplomate status in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) or eligibility to obtain
Eligible for USDA accreditation Minimum 5+ years of veterinary experience, including: (At least 3 years in a clinical or research lab setting)
Strong knowledge of animal care regulations (USDA, AAALAC, PHS)
Experience supporting or working within biomedical or research environments
Proven leadership or supervisory experience
Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills

Plusses

Board certification (ACLAM Diplomate strongly preferred)
PhD in a related field (may support higher compensation band)
Completion of a laboratory animal medicine residency program
Experience working in an academic or university research setting
Experience with diverse animal models, including large animals or non-human primates
Background in cancer research, disease research, or translational studies
Experience with program accreditation processes (AAALAC site visits, program prep)
Experience managing multi-site or large-scale animal care operations

Job Description

The Associate Director of Animal Care serves as the second-in-command within the Division of Animal Care, providing clinical veterinary oversight and supporting the strategic and operational leadership of multiple animal research facilities. This individual plays a critical role in ensuring high-quality animal care, regulatory compliance, and support of biomedical research initiatives. The role includes direct collaboration with investigators, oversight of veterinary and technical teams, and leadership in maintaining accreditation and regulatory standards. This position supports a large academic research environment with multiple facilities and a diverse portfolio of studies, including biomedical and translational research. Key Responsibilities include:

Serve as Chief Clinical Veterinarian providing medical, surgical, and preventative care for research animals
Act as proxy to the Director and oversee daily operations across multiple animal care facilities
Ensure compliance with USDA, AAALAC, and Public Health Service regulations and standards
Participate in and support inspections, site visits, and accreditation processes
Collaborate with investigators on animal model selection, study design, and research support
Provide guidance on animal care protocols and regulatory requirements
Supervise and mentor veterinary staff, technicians, and training programs
Contribute to institutional committees (IACUC, biosafety, emergency preparedness)
Develop and implement policies, procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives
Oversee animal health programs, inventory, and medical supply management
Support financial oversight, vendor management, and operational planning
Assist in training, education programs, and occasional teaching/lecturing
