Assistant Planner (Full-Time)

Job Summary This is entry-level professional work involving a wide range of assignments that requires a sound knowledge of urban planning and zoning processes. Work involves the participation as an individual or as a team member on a wide variety of planning processes requiring general knowledge of urban planning and zoning techniques and the ability to conceptualize and prepare planning reports. Supervision is received through professional and administrative superiors. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities Collect, compile, tabulate and analyze data and factual materials fundamental to a comprehensive planning and zoning program. Disseminate information to the public on planning, zoning and development regulations; make interpretative decisions regarding zoning and development regulations. Respond to email, telephone, or in‑person inquiries; greet the general public and development industry; disseminate information on departmental services and functions. Review and approve zoning applications, paint permits, alcoholic beverage permits, certificates of use, and similar applications based on the City's Zoning and Land Development Regulations. Create and process zoning verification letters. Prepare or assist in the preparation of Board reports for the Planning and Development Boards and the Historic Preservation Boards. Review site and permit plans for compliance with all applicable regulations. Participate in the preparation of zoning and planning reports as requested. Aid in preparation and coordination of various elements of the Development Review Process. Perform field inspections as necessary. Required: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Planning, Public Administration, Social Sciences, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, or a closely related field. Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Valid Driver’s License with proof of automobile insurance. Background check with an acceptable background record. Driving abstract with an acceptable driving record. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of generally accepted principles and practices of urban planning and zoning. Knowledge of modern research techniques and statistical methods. Knowledge of the applicability of local and regional zoning laws and regulations. Ability to understand, interpret and explain land use laws and regulations. Ability to complete projects within assigned time periods. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, graphically, orally, and in writing. Knowledge of software packages such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Suites, GIS, and techniques of preparing maps and charts. Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, managers, administrators, and the general public. Physical Demands Regularly required to walk, sit, write, hear, speak, and at times exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally. May require use of fingers or hands to manipulate objects such as picking, gripping, or pressing. Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Work Environment Work is performed primarily in an office environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Pay and Benefits Starting Pay for Position: $28.19–$31.50 per hour, dependent on qualifications.
