Fractional CFO

Compensation: Starting at $2,500 per client per month, based on an expected 12–15 hours of service per client. Compensation may increase based on client complexity, scope, and time commitment.

Classification: 1099 Contractor; Project-based with an opportunity to scale up client load

Location: This position is fully remote, candidates must live and be authorized to work in the U.S.

The Position

Fractional Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

We are seeking a Fractional CFO to partner with Movement CFO leadership in supporting our mission-driven clients. You will serve as a strategic financial partner to executive directors, CEOs, leadership teams, and boards, providing executive-level guidance across budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, financial reporting, scenario planning, risk management, funding strategy, and organizational growth. You will translate complex financial information into clear, actionable insights that help clients strengthen their financial health, navigate complexity, and make informed decisions that support long-term sustainability and mission impact.

Core Responsibilities

The Fractional CFO provides strategic direction and senior-level financial leadership. Priorities and deliverables will be tailored to each client’s needs, structure, and stage of development.

Strategic Financial Leadership & Partnership

• Advise executive leaders and boards on financial strategy, sustainability, growth, and risk.
• Align financial decisions with organizational mission, values, and strategic priorities.
• Translate financial information into clear insights and recommendations that support effective leadership and governance.

Financial Planning & Organizational Health

• Guide budgeting, forecasting, cash flow planning, and multi-year financial strategy.
• Assess financial performance, revenue outlook, key trends, and organizational health.
• Develop scenarios to help leaders evaluate risks, opportunities, and major decisions.

Financial Infrastructure & Oversight

• Provide strategic oversight of financial reporting, systems, internal controls, and operational practices.
• Partner with accounting teams, auditors, and external advisors to promote accuracy, compliance, and accountability.
• Strengthen financial infrastructure and reporting tools to support organizational growth and change.

Funding, Risk & Compliance

• Advise on the financial management of grants, contracts, restricted funds, and other revenue sources.
• Identify financial and compliance risks and recommend practical mitigation strategies.
• Provide senior-level oversight of audits, Form 990 preparation, funder reporting, and regulatory requirements.

Capacity Building & Organizational Change

• Build financial understanding and shared stewardship among leadership, staff, and boards.
• Support growth, restructuring, fiscal sponsorships, multi-entity development, and other significant transitions.
• Participate in key organizational meetings as appropriate to the engagement.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required Qualifications

• At least 10 years of progressive nonprofit financial leadership experience, including CFO, Finance Director, Controller, or comparable senior-level responsibilities.
• Deep knowledge of nonprofit GAAP, fund accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, and regulatory compliance.
• Significant experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and long-term financial planning.
• Experience advising executive leaders, boards, and finance committees and communicating with non-financial audiences.
• Strong understanding of nonprofit revenue models, including grants, government contracts, philanthropy, earned income, and restricted funds.
• Experience overseeing audits, Form 990 preparation, and nonprofit compliance.
• Proficiency with nonprofit accounting and financial management systems.
• Strong analytical, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to translate organizational mission, values, and strategy into financial priorities and practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA, MBA, or other relevant professional credentials.
• Experience serving as a Fractional CFO or advising multiple organizations.
• Experience supporting growth, restructuring, or significant organizational transitions.
• Familiarity with foundations, fiscal sponsorships, advocacy organizations, and multi-entity structures, including 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), PAC, and LLC entities.
