Sr. Accountant

Previous experience supporting financial audits and year-end closing activities is desirable. Experience researching and correcting historical accounting discrepancies. Type: Full-time; Contract Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm Job Description Handle detailed reconciliation of general ledger accounts, including balance sheet, revenue, expenditure, cash, receivable, payable, and other assigned accounts. Review account activity and supporting documentation to identify discrepancies, unreconciled balances, duplicate or incorrect postings, and other variances. Maintain an organized reconciliation tracker identifying accounts reviewed, outstanding issues, corrective actions, responsible parties, and completion status. Research historical transactions and determine the source of outstanding or unexplained balances. Coordinate with Finance staff and other City departments to obtain documentation and resolve accounting discrepancies. Prepare reconciliation schedules and supporting workpapers documenting account balances, reconciling items, and recommended corrective actions. Assist with clearing aged or outstanding reconciling items. Prepare or recommend journal entries and other accounting adjustments necessary to correct identified discrepancies. Assist with reconciliation between subsidiary records/systems and the City's general ledger. Review general ledger activity for appropriate account classification, fund allocation, department coding, and accounting treatment. Support month-end and year-end closing activities, as needed. Assist with preparation of schedules and documentation necessary to support the City's annual financial audit. Perform other related accounting and financial analysis assignments as necessary to support completion of the reconciliation project. Position Requirements Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to analyze and reconcile large volumes of financial data. Experience with municipal ERP/financial systems is highly desirable. Strong governmental or fund accounting experience, preferably with a California local government or other public agency. Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and governmental accounting practices.
