Perkins Wildlife Steward

As an Upper Song Bird Aviary/Perkins Steward Volunteer, your main responsibility is guest interaction and access to the walkway while ensuring guest safety and enjoyment while visiting the aviary and Perkins area. The upper songbird aviary can only be open to the public when a staff member or trained volunteer is present. You will greet guests at entry and exit points, prevent unwanted animal interactions, and share information from aviary and Perkins signage with visitors. Additionally, during the middle hour of your shift, you would become a rover, walking around to other areas of Perkins and engage with guests, sharing facts and information. Training and support will be provided to enhance your knowledge and interaction skills over time. Responsibilities:
- Greet guests entering and exiting the Upper Song Bird Aviary and Perkins area.
- Ensure no unwanted animal interactions occur, especially birds landing on guests' shoulders near exit doors.
- Maintain awareness of aviary and Perkins signage, sharing relevant facts and information with visitors.
- Post at designated locations within the outer doors of the aviary, ensuring clear communication with guests.
- Engage with guests in a friendly and informative manner, answering questions and providing assistance as needed.
- Monitor guest flow and activity within the aviary, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
- Participate in roving steward duties, engaging with guests in various areas and sharing information from Perkins signage.
- Attend training sessions and meetings as required to stay updated on aviary procedures and guest engagement techniques.
- Ability to engage with diverse groups of visitors. Respectful and courteous demeanor, helping to provide exceptional guest experiences.
- Ability to follow instructions and adhere to aviary and wildlife guidelines for guest interaction.
- Reliable and punctual, able to commit to scheduled volunteer shifts.
- Comfortable standing and walking for extended periods within the aviary and Perkins area.
- Interest in wildlife conservation and willingness to learn about aviary species and exhibits.
- Willingness to undergo training and orientation sessions provided by the museum's Wildlife team. Cleveland Museum of Natural History
