Our Thoracic Surgery program is a high-volume, academically driven service performing nearly 800 operations annually, with a strong focus on minimally invasive and robotic techniques as well as comprehensive thoracic surgical oncology. We care for a diverse patient population and are committed to delivering thoughtful, patient-centered care across the full spectrum of thoracic disease. As we continue to grow, we are seeking a Chief Physician Assistant to help guide and support our PA team, strengthen clinical operations, and contribute to the ongoing development of a high-functioning thoracic surgery service. This role is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of patient care, optimizing operational performance, and supporting the professional development of Physician Assistants within the service.Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & AdministrationProvide overall leadership and supervision of Physician Assistants within Thoracic SurgeryManage staffing, scheduling, and daily operations to ensure continuous clinical coverageLead recruitment, onboarding, training, and retention of PA staffConduct performance evaluations and support professional developmentAssist with payroll, budgeting, and resource managementServe as a liaison between PAs, physicians, nursing, and administrative leadershipClinical OversightEnsure delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care across all clinical settingsCollaborate with attending physicians and interdisciplinary teams to coordinate careMonitor clinical performance, patient outcomes, and satisfaction metricsSupport development and implementation of clinical protocols and pathwaysEducation & Program DevelopmentDevelop and maintain PA orientation, training, and competency programsMentor and support ongoing education and clinical skill developmentParticipate in departmental initiatives, research activities, and quality improvement effortsCompliance & QualityEnsure compliance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements (e.g., JCAHO, NYS DOH)Support audit readiness and accreditation standardsOversee documentation standards and reporting requirementsClinical ResponsibilitiesPerform comprehensive patient assessments, including histories and physical examsOrder, perform, and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic proceduresAssist in thoracic surgical procedures and provide perioperative careDevelop and implement treatment plans in collaboration with supervising physiciansPerform advanced procedures (as credentialed), including line placement and chest tube insertionRespond to emergencies and perform life-saving interventions as neededQualifications / RequirementsBachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited programCurrent certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)Active New York State Physician Assistant license (or eligibility)Minimum of 4–6 years of clinical experience; thoracic or surgical experience strongly preferredPrior leadership or supervisory experience preferredCurrent BLS and ACLS certificationsStrong leadership, clinical judgment, and communication skillsVK-LIMontefiore Medical Center is an equal employment opportunity employer.
