Job Summary Starting Salary: $24.50/hr. Minimum Requirements & Essential Functions Competitive candidates are encouraged to apply for a limited number of paid sponsorships to a law enforcement academy. A strong candidate has a good work history and a low incident rate of substance abuse. Minimum Requirements Good verifiable work history. Accredited high school or GED diploma. (Will not accept a certificate of completion.) Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English. At least 20 years of age. U.S. Citizen. Valid driver's license for the last year. Must not have been convicted of a felony. Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character, false statements, perjury or domestic violence. Must not have received a dishonorable discharge from the United States Armed Forces. No illegal drug usage within the last year. Other drug usage will be evaluated on a case by case basis. Processing & Training Online application Physical Abilities Test (PAT) - View Details of Fitness Standards Voice Stress Analysis (truth verification) Ride‑along with a deputy (optional) Complete Background Check Medical exam & drug screen (after conditional job offer) Psychological Evaluation (after conditional job offer) Once selected for processing, candidates for academy sponsorship must take the Basic Abilities Test (BAT) available at any law enforcement academy in the State of Florida. Processing time on average is 3‑5 months. Training Recruits hired for sponsorship to the law enforcement academy will attend an FDLE Law Enforcement Academy which will prepare them physically and mentally for a career in law enforcement. Academy graduates are sworn‑in as deputy sheriffs and begin Deputy Orientation. This extensive 4‑week program covers all high liability areas, including driving, shooting, defensive tactics, and agency policies and procedures. After successfully completing Basic Recruit Training, new deputies will complete an additional 14 weeks in the Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP). This one‑on‑one training with a certified Field Training Officer ensures that all new deputies are fully prepared to be a solo deputy. Physical Demands & Work Environment Deputy Sheriffs are responsible for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of laws and regulations. This work involves an element of personal danger and frequent contact with the public during routine and emergency situations. Cardiovascular strength and stamina, ability to pursue subjects on foot across varied terrains, engage in violent and physical confrontations, secure a resisting subject with restraints, visual and hearing requirements, manual dexterity, flexibility, strength, utility equipment handling, coordination, speed, balance, respiratory competence, ability to operate a motor vehicle safely, and resistance to acute pain. Employees may encounter chemicals, fumes, toxic substances, animals, insects, noise, vibrations, slippery surfaces, lightning, explosives, oil, tobacco smoke, radiation, radar, allergenic substances, electrical hazards, potential burns, confined or cramped positions, irregular hours, irregular eating and sleeping schedules, bodily injury, contact with blood, bodily fluids, infectious or contagious diseases.
