Position Overview

Our organization is in search of a distinguished academic physician leader to take on the role of Professor and Chair for the Department of Family Medicine & Community Health (DFMCH). This opportunity arises following the retirement of Dr. James Pacala, who has successfully led the department since 2017. As one of the largest and most comprehensive medical schools in the nation, we operate campuses in the Twin Cities, Duluth, and St. Cloud, benefiting from a collaborative health sciences environment that integrates schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, public health, and veterinary medicine. Our Medical School is highly regarded for its outstanding education, research, and clinical care, consistently ranking among the top institutions in the country for NIH funding and innovation.

Department Background

Founded over 50 years ago, DFMCH is one of the original 16 family medicine departments in the United States and ranks among the largest within our Medical School. The department oversees 10 family medicine residency programs and four fellowships across Minnesota, training 167 residents and fellows each year, with over 2,500 graduates since 1971. DFMCH is nationally acclaimed for its research achievements, having been the leading NIH-funded family medicine department in the country for the past three years, with an average of nearly $17 million in sponsored funding annually. Additionally, the department is instrumental in promoting the Medical School's healthy aging strategy, including the establishment of a new interdisciplinary Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Care in collaboration with the Department of Medicine.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership for the department's clinical, educational, and research initiatives.
• Serve as the Family Medicine Clinical Service Unit Leader within our organization.
• Foster collaboration and build multidisciplinary partnerships.
• Advance research and innovation within the department.
• Mentor faculty and trainees to enhance their professional development.

Qualifications

• Must possess an MD or DO degree.
• Board certification in Family Medicine is required.
• Eligibility for medical licensure in Minnesota is essential.
• Experience in leading complex clinical and academic operations is necessary.
• A collaborative and visionary approach to leadership is crucial.

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary for this position ranges from $400,000 to $500,000, depending on the qualifications, education, and experience of the selected candidate. This leadership role also includes eligibility for retirement plans and additional benefits.
