Work Shift Day (United States of America) Job Summary The Medical Assistant (MA) supports physicians and other healthcare professionals by performing clinical and administrative tasks to ensure efficient patient care delivery. Working closely with patients, the MA handles front‑ and back‑office functions in a fast‑paced environment under the direction of the Nurse Supervisor and/or Practice/Office Manager. The MA gathers and records vital signs and patient information, prepares patients for exams, assists during treatments, coordinates tests and follow‑up care, and records treatments in the medical record. Patient safety and experience are always central to the MA’s care delivery. Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions Clinical Duties and Expectations Provides relationship‑based, patient‑centered care that is consistent with population‑specific characteristics, adapting service delivery to reflect cultural diversity. Partners with the patient and significant others and/or family, keeping the patient at ease through a collaborative and communicative approach. Prepares patients for the visit with physicians/APPs. Prepares rooms and equipment, and aids physicians/APPs with treatment of patients. Carries out orders generated from the office visit and responds to patient requests outside the office visit. Maintains the safety needs of the patient at all times. May support front office operations by assisting with check‑in, check‑out, scheduling, and other non‑clinical functions. Exemplary Practice and Outcomes Provides patient care in accordance with recognized clinical practice guidelines and standards set by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or similar organizations. Adheres to federal, state, and local laws and regulations as well as organizational and industry standards for clinical care. Upholds all health care system, organizational, and WMG policies and procedures and clinical competencies. Teamwork and Collaboration Collaborates with providers, nurses, and clinical staff to uphold continuity and consistency of care. Participates in daily huddles, staff meetings, and medical group or system workgroups/committees to represent the voice of the medical assistant. Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration by practicing inclusively, promoting recruitment and retention of all healthcare team members. Participates in quality improvement initiatives to align with best practices in medical assisting. May serve as a preceptor to assist in the onboarding and/or training of new team members, trainees, or students. Professional Development and Initiative Completes all initial and ongoing professional competency assessment, required mandatory education, and population‑specific education. Demonstrates leadership by identifying areas for improvement in care delivery and suggesting innovative solutions. Participates in workgroups, committees, and shared decision‑making groups. Regularly reflects on personal performance and areas of strength or weakness, seeking relevant training or mentorship to continuously improve. Resources and Support Supports efficient and effective use of material resources in a fiscally responsible manner, minimizing waste of medical supplies and medications. Alerts supervisors or ordering staff when supplies are running low. May provide staffing coverage for absences, vacation, and leave. Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct. Required Minimum Education High School Diploma General or Other / Certificate Medical Assisting Required Minimum Licenses and Certifications BLS - Basic Life Support or ARC-BLS - American Red Cross Basic Life Support or BLS-I - Basic Life Support - Instructor CMA - Certified Medical Assistant or NRCMA (NAHP) - Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant or NCMA - National Certified Medical Assistant or RMA - Registered Medical Assistant or CCMA - Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Additional Licenses and Certifications Current certification from one of the following medical assisting credentialing bodies: AAMA (CMA), AMT (RMA), NHA (CCMA), NCCT (NCMA), NAHP (NRCMA) Must have a current BLS card from the American Heart Association Required Minimum Experience Experience in a physician practice setting preferred; minimum 1 year of experience in the area or specialty the candidate is applying for is preferred. Required Minimum Skills Ability to work quickly and efficiently to assure patient comfort and satisfaction. High ability to read, write, and speak English; basic computer skills required. High organizational and attention to detail. High ability to engage in teamwork and maintain positive working relationships.
