Shift: 8:00AM-4:30PM Monday- Friday
The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Physician 3- non-permane ntat the Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW), in Gig Harbor Washington. This is a day shift position that will require work to be completed onsite at the facility.
The Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW) is a 62.6-acre facility located approximately two miles from Gig Harbor. The site includes living units, administration buildings, a health clinic, education buildings, a gymnasium, a chapel, industries buildings, food service buildings and support facilities.
Correctional Health is a rewarding career path at DOC, in which health care professionals treat a wide array of cases for patients residing in a state correctional facility. Health Services is responsible for basic primary care for incarcerated individuals. All disciplines within all of the 12 correctional facilities work closely together to reach a common goal, providing the best, most efficient, and cost-effective health care possible. Emphasis is placed on early identification of health concerns, care for acute and chronic health problems, and preventive care.

Duties can include:
Provide direct patient services
Tasks include:
- Primary care provider – manage caseload assigned to include daily rounding on IPU patients or others as assigned.
- Ensure delivery of quality medical services for all patients
- Provide consults on higher acuity patients
- Coordinate with specialized MD services offsite and onsite as clinically indicated
- Diagnose chronic and acute maladies
- Assist in the management of facility chronic and acute processes
- Identify and prescribe appropriate medications
- Coordinate care with other providers
- Provide appropriate follow-up after offsite emergency or scheduled specialty visits or procedures
- Order appropriate lab tests
- Counsel and instruct patients on self-care
- Participate in multi‑disciplinary team meetings with custody staff per policy guidelines
- Assist with appropriate discharge planning
- Ensure all service provision is in accordance with regulatory standards and all DOC policies and procedures to include The Offender Health Plan and the DOC Formulary
- Due to the limited hours of patient appointment times available in the clinic each day, all of that time will be filled with direct patient contact
- Be consistent and punctual in meeting appointment commitments
Meet all documentation required in a timely manner
Tasks include:
- Provide proper documentation in the chart
- Ensure all charting (to include CPOE printouts) is appropriately filed in a timely manner
- Enter medication orders into pharmacy computer system utilizing CPOE function
- Produce timely, clearly written reports and progress notes
- Ensure follow-up appointments are scheduled and met within statewide expectations
- Research and respond to patient kites in a timely manner not to exceed one working week – make an appointment or write a response as appropriate
- Ensure encounters are turned in or directly entered into the computer system immediately upon completion of appointments
Oversight of assigned patient caseload for medication, labs, and other treatment compliance, efficacy and safety
Tasks include:
- Schedule routine follow-ups to monitor efficacy of treatment strategy
- Ensure that medication orders do not expire
- Research and respond to kite concerns about medication reactions or renewal requests
- Provide timely follow-up to requests for consultation by other discipline professionals
- Analyze pharmacy and nursing reports concerning pill line no shows and appointment no shows and determine appropriate course of action in accordance with statewide directives
- Take appropriate action/make referrals on all aberrant lab results
- Monitor lab values on chronic care patients to optimize health outcomes
- Provide information to HCM1 or respond directly to level one grievances associated with assigned patient caseload
Be a contributing and supportive team member of the medical provider and the total health
services team

Other duties as assigned
Tasks include:
- Promote safety; be an active participant, be aware, be alert, act safely and make recommendations
- Attend all required training
- Manage email and ensure timely response as required
- Keep abreast of new methods, techniques and other developments in the field through reading research journals, attending seminars, workshops, professional affiliations, etc.
- Remain up to date concerning specific work flow expectations and processes at WCCW.
- Participate in Medical On Duty on-call rotations
Required qualifications:
- Education: A doctorate in medicine OR doctor of osteopathy from a recognized school of medicine or osteopathy.
- Initial and continuous unblemished/unrestricted licensure in the State of Washington as a Medical Doctor of Doctor of Osteopathy. Must ensure that license is renewed in accordance with BOP regulations and that proof of current licensure is provided by anniversary date each year to facility leadership.
- Maintain current CPR certification and ensure that proof of current status is provided annually to facility leadership
- Experience: one year post residency with a demonstrated in-depth working knowledge of medical assessment techniques, medication uses, acute and chronic illness management with appropriate use of ICD-9 diagnosis codes.
- Ethics and Integrity: Demonstrated knowledge of professional, ethical guidelines for medical professionals. Maintains professional boundaries and has expectations that supervisors, peers and subordinates do the same. This includes legal and professional expectations and guidelines concerning patient confidentiality. Must have a demonstrated prescriptive history that maintains a ban on the prescription and administration of behavior altering medication in dangerous amounts by dangerous methods, or without appropriate supervision and periodic evaluation.
- Exhibits the following character traits in the work environment: Sets the standards for professional behavior. Model pro-social behaviors; reinforce positive behaviors; redirect negative behaviors; and effectively communicate observed behaviors to responsible program staff, administrators, and supervisors. Demonstrated ability to build positive and constructive working relationships with patients, supervisors. Displays a positive attitude and optimism regarding occupation in correctional medicine.
LOCAL AND JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:
- A. Uses tools, techniques, physical and cognitive skills and abilities to practice medicine safely and effectively in the correctional setting and within the scope of practice defined by state law and administrative code so that patient care provided is safe, effective, efficient and clinically appropriate.
- 1. Assessment, monitoring and interpretation of objective and subjective data collected about health status, clinical condition or situation or individual's family, observation, inspection, and examination to identify patterns and variances from the desired outcome.
- 2. Diagnose health related problems and determination of the outcomes to be achieved.
- 3. Ensure continuity of care over time and place. Deliver health care, defining timeframes and pathways for delivery of services, prioritizing and sequencing care to be provided.
- 4. Implementation of the plan of care by providing direct patient care, directing others about the urgency, time frames and methods to deliver health care on or off‑site, determining when needs for care become more urgent, need clarification or another type or level of intention is necessary; taking action as necessary to provide orders and accomplish prescribed interventions in a timely and clinically responsive manner.
- 5. Analysis and evaluation of the structure, process and timeframes for service delivery, the expected effects of treatment or intervention and the outcomes to be achieved; revision of the plan of care to prevent complications; and intervene to address new or emerging issues or improve care and service delivery.
- B. Delegates and assigns responsibility through proper communication to the nurses and assistive nursing personnel after considering the needs, condition and stability of the patient, complexity of task and predictability of outcome. Teaches, instructs, monitors, supervises and evaluates the implementation of tasks and the results of patient care assigned to other personnel.
- C. Participates and evaluates their own practice for technical competency and safety, obtains education or training to retain or improve skills and abilities based upon the work assigned and informs immediate supervisors if there are specific tasks, techniques, skills or abilities that they are unable to perform competently.
- D. Communicates effectively verbally, in writing and via computer or other electronic media with offenders and health care personnel, custody and other institutional personnel so that information is solicited to identify problems and develop solutions. This way plans are delivered and implemented by self and others and revised as necessary resulting in a safe, timely and clinically appropriate service provision.
