2027 Drug Substance Engineering Intern (PhD)

AbbVie seeks a PhD-level intern to support drug substance engineering during summer 2027. The role focuses on characterizing powder properties and optimizing micronization processes for active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing in North Chicago.
Responsibilities
- Conduct experimental studies to characterize powder properties and behavior
- Evaluate micronization technique performance with various feed mechanisms
- Analyze data and trends to identify process performance signatures
- Develop and verify computational models for micronization systems
- Present findings to departmental and cross-functional teams
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in PhD program in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or related field
- Expected graduation between December 2027 and June 2028
- Enrollment in university for at least one semester after internship
- Experience with physical characterization techniques (flowability, adhesion, cohesion, bulk density, particle size)
- Familiarity with comminution processes
- Proficiency in computational modeling (fluid dynamics, discrete element method)
