Recreation Specialist (Part-Time)

Overview The City of Carson is now accepting applications for a Recreation Specialist position. This recruitment will remain open until vacancies are filled and may close without notice. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented and customer-focused professional who will support the department and the public in the effective use of ActiveNet recreation management software. They are comfortable learning and navigating systems, troubleshooting user issues, and providing clear, friendly guidance to both internal staff and community members. Job Summary Under general supervision, conduct special interest classes at various recreation centers and assist the reservations section by inputting and maintaining classes, activities, registrations, and managing the department’s social media pages. This part-time, at-will position is limited to a maximum of 960–980 hours per fiscal year, with working hours typically 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and occasional weekend availability preferred. Responsibilities Plan, organize, and instruct special interest classes or programs. Develop and schedule classes for various age groups. Prepare reports on the status of the special interest class or program as needed. Assist with reservation input and maintenance of classes, activities, and registration. Manage and update the department’s social media pages. Perform related duties as assigned. Qualifications Strong proficiency in customer service, with a proven record of assisting diverse groups of users in a helpful, patient, and solutions-driven manner. Experience working with or supporting recreation management systems (ActiveNet experience highly desirable). Ability to process registrations, reservations, payments, and account updates accurately while maintaining confidentiality and attention to detail. Comfort with problem-solving and escalating issues appropriately when necessary. Ability to collaborate effectively with internal staff, respond to public inquiries, and maintain professionalism in fast-paced or high-volume situations. Strong organizational skills, time‑management, and the ability to prioritize tasks while supporting daily program operations. Patient, approachable, and empathetic in customer interactions. Tech‑savvy and eager to learn new systems or processes. Reliable, accountable, and committed to delivering high-quality service. Adaptable and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Education and Experience Completion of formal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance and demonstrable proficiency in an appropriate area. Knowledge Special interest area of instruction; correct English usage. Skills Effectively communicate orally and in writing. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and deal tactfully with the public. Licenses and Certificates Special qualifications for particular recreation and leisure service activities shall be added as required. Employment Type Part‑time unclassified position, limited to 960–980 hours per fiscal year. At‑will, FLSA: Non‑Exempt.
