Position: Director of Athletics Reports to: Superintendent Supervises: Athletic Coaches, K-8 Athletic Coordinator, K-8 Intramural Manager, Athletic Volunteers, Faculty Managers and Secretary to the Director of Athletics Contract: 260 Day Administrative Contract
Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university required. 7 years or more successful head coaching experience. Administrative Licensure with emphasis in the administration and supervision of athletics/student activity preferred, or ability to acquire supervisor licensure upon hiring. Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication. Evidence of a successful college athletic recruitment plan. Demonstrated long-range planning skills. Ability to establish positive relationships with staff, students, parents, and the community. Exhibits acceptable standards of ethics, moral character and sound judgment.
General Responsibilities
Leadership and Program Administration
- Provide overall leadership, direction, supervision, and evaluation of the district's athletic and student activity programs.
- Develop, implement, and monitor goals, objectives, and strategic initiatives for district athletic and student activity programs.
- Advise the Superintendent and building principals in decision-making, program development, and long-range planning related to athletics and student activities.
- Ensure the vertical alignment and progression of athletic programs from middle school through high school.
- Require and supervise effective articulation between middle school and high school athletic programs through collaboration with head varsity coaches.
- Develop methods for obtaining regular feedback from student-athletes, participants, parents, coaches, and stakeholders regarding program effectiveness.
- Participate as a member of district athletic leadership and advisory committees as assigned.
- Promote continuous improvement and make recommendations regarding program enhancements, staffing, facilities, and operational procedures.
Coaching Personnel Leadership and Evaluation
- Recruit, identify, and recommend candidates to the Superintendent or designee for coaching positions, in consultation with building principals.
- Guide head varsity coaches in recommending candidates for subordinate coaching positions within their respective programs.
- Assist in the recruitment and retention of high-quality coaching personnel.
- Ensure coaches complete all required hiring, onboarding, credentialing, and Human Resources requirements.
- Conduct mandatory preseason meetings with coaches to review district expectations, policies, procedures, safety requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Conduct preseason meetings with head coaches to establish goals and expectations for their programs.
- Conduct post-season conferences with head coaches to review program performance and establish future goals.
- Evaluate head varsity coaches and supervise the evaluation process for all coaching personnel.
- Assist head varsity coaches, as appropriate, in evaluating assistant coaches and other coaching staff.
- Provide ongoing leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for coaching personnel.
Athletic Operations and Event Management
- Oversee scheduling and administration of all district athletic events and contests at the middle school and high school levels.
- Coordinate and approve contest scheduling, rescheduling, tournament participation, and special athletic events.
- Oversee transportation arrangements for athletic teams and student activity participants.
- Coordinate facility usage and scheduling for athletic and student activity programs.
- Delegate responsibilities to faculty managers, event supervisors, and other personnel for the effective operation of events and programs.
- Oversee the selection, assignment, and supervision of game personnel, event workers, and support staff.
- Coordinate and supervise event management procedures for all athletic contests and student activities.
- Assist building principals in scheduling and utilizing district facilities for athletic and student activity purposes.
- Attend and assist in the supervision of athletic events and student activities as necessary.
Student Eligibility, Compliance, and Participation
- Oversee all matters related to athletic eligibility and student participation requirements.
- Ensure compliance with district policies, conference regulations, league rules, state athletic association requirements, and applicable laws.
- Coordinate communication regarding athletic participation requirements, physical examinations, eligibility standards, and required documentation.
- Monitor and enforce procedures designed to maintain program integrity and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure equitable access and participation opportunities for all eligible students.
Safety, Security, and Risk Management
- Monitor all phases of the athletic program to ensure the safety and well-being of student-athletes, coaches, spectators, and participants.
- Coordinate security and crowd-management procedures for athletic events and student activities.
- Make necessary arrangements for security personnel and emergency response planning for events and activities.
- Work collaboratively with district administrators, coaches, and staff to maintain safe athletic facilities and operating environments.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, risk management procedures, and emergency protocols.
Financial Management and Resource Allocation
- Oversee all financial affairs related to athletics and student activities, including budgets, expenditures, purchasing, fundraising oversight, ticket sales, and financial reporting.
- Develop and administer departmental budgets and make recommendations regarding resource allocation.
- Review and approve athletic and student activity expenditures in accordance with district procedures.
- Work collaboratively with the Treasurer to oversee athletic and student activity accounts.
- Ensure responsible stewardship of district resources and fiscal accountability.
Facilities and Equipment Management
- Work with the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds to coordinate maintenance, improvements, and long-range planning for athletic facilities.
- Monitor the condition, safety, and usability of athletic facilities and equipment.
- Recommend facility improvements and capital projects that support district athletic programs.
- Serve as the district representative regarding community and outside group use of athletic facilities.
Community Relations and Communication
- Serve as the district's primary representative for athletics with parents, booster organizations, community groups, conference officials, and external organizations.
- Provide leadership and guidance to booster clubs and parent support organizations associated with athletic and student activity programs.
- Promote positive public relations and communications regarding district athletic and student activity programs.
- Represent the district at conferences, meetings, workshops, and professional organizations related to athletics and student activities.
- Foster positive relationships with students, families, staff, alumni, community organizations, and feeder programs.
Policy Development and Program Oversight
- Develop, review, and recommend revisions to athletic handbooks, procedures, and operational guidelines.
- Advise the Superintendent regarding additions, revisions, or updates to Board policies affecting athletics and student activities.
- Ensure consistent implementation of district policies, procedures, and expectations across all athletic programs.
- Monitor program effectiveness and recommend corrective action when necessary.
Supervision of Student Activities
- Assist principals in planning, implementing, and supervising student activity programs and related accounts.
- Coordinate awards programs, recognition activities, and celebrations for student-athletes and participants.
- Attend and supervise student activities as assigned.
- Assist subordinate athletic coordinators, faculty managers, and activity supervisors in carrying out their responsibilities.
