Finance Director

The Global Fund for Innovation and Resilience (GFIR) is a 501(c)(3) organization, based in California, operating globally to strengthening climate resilience through technology, innovation, and strategic partnerships. The organization combines early warning systems, digital technology, and rapid financial assistance to help people prepare for and respond to climate-triggered disasters. GFIR collaborates with local partners, businesses, and communities to improve preparedness, protect livelihoods, and support faster recovery after disasters. Its work emphasizes resilience of vulnerable communities, workforce and business supply chains in disaster-prone regions. Initial program activities focus on communities and supply chains in selected developing countries. Position Summary The Finance Director serves as the organization's senior volunteer finance officer and reports directly to the President & CEO and CFO. The Finance Director is responsible for providing oversight of GFIR's financial management, nonprofit compliance, budgeting, and financial stewardship. Working closely with the President & CEO and CFO and other members of the leadership team, the Finance Director helps ensure that the organization's financial resources are managed responsibly and in accordance with applicable nonprofit requirements. The position also supports the financial integrity of GFIR's emergency financial assistance programs and donor-funded activities. This volunteer position requires an estimated commitment of approximately 5–7 hours per week . The initial appointment is expected to be approximately three months and may be renewed by mutual agreement based on organizational needs and the interests of both parties. As the organization's programs and financial resources expand, the nature of the appointment may evolve over time in accordance with organizational needs. Provide oversight of the organization's financial management, including budgeting, accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls. Coordinate nonprofit financial compliance, including IRS Form 990, California nonprofit reporting requirements, and maintenance of documentation supporting the organization's tax-exempt status. Coordinate with external accountants, financial institutions, and other professional advisors, as appropriate. Budgeting & Organizational Finance Prepare and monitor the organization's annual operating budget and cash flow. Support financial planning related to organizational operations and fundraising activities. Prepare periodic financial updates for the President & CEO and CFO. Emergency Financial Assistance & Grant Management Provide financial oversight of GFIR's emergency financial assistance mechanism and related financial controls. Support the development of financial procedures that promote transparent, accountable, and auditable digital cash assistance. Review financial aspects of grant proposals, donor budgets, and financial reporting. Collaborate with the technology team to ensure appropriate financial controls are incorporated into GFIR's digital payment processes. Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess many of the following qualifications. Required Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, Public Administration, or a related discipline. Demonstrated experience in nonprofit financial management, including budgeting, financial reporting, internal controls, regulatory compliance, and financial administration. Familiarity with financial governance for grant-funded organizations and responsible stewardship of charitable resources. Understanding of financial governance relating to digital payments or emergency cash assistance, including appropriate financial controls, auditability, fraud prevention, and related regulatory considerations. Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills. High standards of integrity, professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment. Preferred Familiarity with California nonprofit requirements and U.S. nonprofit reporting obligations. Experience with humanitarian cash transfer programs, cross-border payment operations, or financial governance involving digital payment systems.
