Laboratory Technicians

Job Summary The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Utah seeks a laboratory technician to join our team of investigators, lab personnel, and GI study coordinators. The role involves building and maintaining a comprehensive Microbiota and GI Immunology Consortia (MAGIC) Biobank for patients who visit our gastroenterology, hepatology, and GI surgery clinics, procedures, and operating rooms. The technician will coordinate technical and administrative details in clinical research studies, assisting Principal Investigator Amiko Uchida, MD, in achieving study integrity and objectives through the successful implementation and completion of protocols and procedures. The position uses a sophisticated biorepository system (OpenSpecimen) and RedCap for patient surveys. Candidates should be highly motivated, organized, and possess excellent communication skills, with a background in bench science and interest in advancing health and disease understanding using patient biospecimens. Responsibilities This job description outlines the general nature and level of work performed by employees in this classification. It is not a comprehensive inventory of all duties. Essential Functions Attend and participate in investigator and staff meetings; advise the team regarding specific study assignments and timelines. Familiar with the process of clinical research coordinator (CRC) biospecimen collection (screening, enrolling, and consenting patients). Practice biosafety laboratory skills and execute workflow protocols with excellent scientific laboratory skills. Make statistical calculations, analyze data, and prepare reports summarizing results. Perform quality improvement of workflows, documentation, and organization. Conduct literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information for research. Perform tests and procedures using laboratory equipment. Monitor and assist with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials. Maintain records for biospecimens. Minimum Qualifications Equivalency Statement : One year of higher education can be substituted for one year of directly related work experience (e.g., bachelor’s degree = 4 years of work experience). Laboratory Technician I: Requires little to no related experience. Laboratory Technician II: Requires at least one year of related experience.
