Sports Medicine Physician

Position is on a 10/12 Pay Plan at 0.8 FTE, meaning working 10 months per year with salary paid over 12 months. Job Summary Reporting to the Director of Health Services, the Sports Medicine Physician provides comprehensive outpatient care, including diagnosis, treatment, and counseling within the scope of sports medicine and primary care. This position emphasizes holistic health, patient access, and a strong student experience. Key Responsibilities Treat sports injuries and common medical conditions Evaluate injuries and create treatment and recovery plans Perform basic medical procedures (stitches, splints, etc.) Order and review tests like X-rays and labs Educate patients on injury prevention and overall health Work with other healthcare staff and SJSU Athletics Keep accurate medical records Participate in meetings and health programs Help improve services and patient care Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a diverse, multicultural population in a university community Thorough understanding of general medicine, public health principles, and diagnostic clinical decision-making, with the ability to provide treatment and medical counseling Demonstrated ability to efficiently prioritize patients’ problems based on urgency and demonstrated critical thinking to perform accurately in a detail‑oriented environment Ability and manual dexterity to perform patient care tasks, along with capacity to quickly assess emergency situations and take prompt action Working knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations, as well as the ethics and standards of practicing medicine, enabling compliance with policies and procedures Ability to prepare comprehensive case histories and handle multiple work priorities effectively Thorough knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation, and spelling, enabling effective correspondence and report formatting Technical skills to work with medical records and scheduling software’s; acuity in learning new software as applicable to position responsibilities Excellent customer service and public relations skills, facilitating effective communication across a variety of venues Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications Required Qualifications Graduation from a medical school License and Certification Requirements: Physicians - Specialty Services must possess* and maintain: A valid license to practice medicine in the State of California Current board certification in an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) specialty or subspecialty appropriate for their assigned specialty duties A valid Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration and number for prescribing controlled substances Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification as appropriate for the assigned duties Completion of one (1) or more residency programs and/or fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent in a specialty appropriate to their assigned specialty duties Preferred Qualifications A valid California Department of Public Health‑Radiologic Health Branch (CDPH‑RHB) Supervisor & Operator Permit Dual Board Certification in Primary Care in addition to Sports Medicine Two (2) years of experience practicing Sports Medicine independently Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in Primary Care Experience working with college populations (typically demonstrated through working with collegiate athletics programs and/or student health services) Compensation Classification: Physician – Specialty Services Anticipated Hiring Range: $16,500/month - $17,500/month (Salary is reflective of 0.8 FTE) CSU Salary Range: $12,016/month - $23,385/month San José State University offers employees a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30-35% of your base salary.
