Director Of Fixed Asset Accounting & Capital Projects

About the Opportunity

A large, complex transportation and infrastructure organization is seeking a strategic accounting leader to oversee its fixed asset accounting function and lead a significant accounting transformation initiative.

This role will be responsible for accounting and financial reporting related to a substantial portfolio of infrastructure, facilities, equipment, and construction-in-progress assets. The position will play a critical role in strengthening financial controls, improving accounting processes, supporting audit remediation efforts, and establishing a scalable operating model for the organization's fixed asset environment.

This is a highly visible leadership position that will partner closely with Accounting, Engineering, Operations, IT, Grants, and Executive Leadership.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead all aspects of fixed asset and capital project accounting for a large asset-intensive organization.
• Drive the remediation of audit findings through the implementation of sustainable controls, processes, and documentation standards.
• Transform manual and spreadsheet-based processes into scalable, controls-based operating procedures.
• Oversee accounting for fixed assets, construction-in-progress (CIP), asset capitalization, depreciation, asset classifications, and placed-in-service determinations.
• Develop and implement policies, SOPs, account reconciliations, and control frameworks supporting fixed asset accounting.
• Lead large-scale asset reconciliations between project accounting, fixed asset subledgers, and the general ledger.
• Partner with Operations, Engineering, and Project Management teams to obtain asset completion documentation, service dates, locations, and supporting records.
• Coordinate with internal and external auditors and support ongoing audit validation activities.
• Provide executive leadership with updates regarding project status, risks, milestones, and remediation progress.
• Build, develop, and lead a team while establishing accountability and ownership across key workstreams.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience within asset-intensive, infrastructure, transportation, utilities, government, construction, manufacturing, or similar environments.
• Strong experience in fixed asset accounting, capitalization, depreciation, asset lifecycle management, and construction-in-progress accounting.
• Demonstrated success leading accounting process improvements, control enhancements, or transformation initiatives.
• Experience supporting complex audit environments and implementing sustainable accounting controls.
• Ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence stakeholders across finance and operational functions.
• Experience creating policies, procedures, SOPs, and audit-support documentation.
• Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA designation strongly preferred.
• Experience with governmental or public-sector accounting environments.
• Knowledge of GASB reporting standards and fixed asset accounting.
• Experience with grant-funded projects and fixed asset reporting requirements.
• Experience implementing or enhancing ERP fixed asset modules, including Microsoft Dynamics 365.
• Prior experience leading audit remediation, control remediation, restatement support, or accounting modernization programs.
