The Investment Accountant is responsible for the accounting, reporting, and analysis of Markel's investment portfolio.Job ResponsibilitiesReconcile investment data within Markel's investment systemPerform account reconciliations including identification and remediation of all issues in compliance with SOX control requirementsPrepare journal entries and perform monthly general ledger closings and reporting deliverablesPrepare and review investment related disclosures for Forms 10-Q and 10-K in accordance with GAAP as well as various statutory financial statements in accordance with Statutory accounting standardsResearch and analyze investment fluctuations and communicate key drivers to managementResearch and interpret accounting guidance and compliance regulations pertaining to investmentsAssist with internal and external audit reviewAssist with systems integration and testing as neededWork closely with other functional areas (i.e. treasury, financial reporting, corporate accounting, statutory reporting, tax) to resolve issues and support achievement of business goalsAssist in maintaining investment related SOX documentation and remediation of any control issues in compliance with control requirementsCollaborate with teammates to identify, design, and implement process improvements for greater efficiency and effectivenessAssist with ad-hoc requests and other strategic accounting and business projects as they ariseEducationBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related disciplineCertificationCertified Public Accountant (CPA) license preferredWork Experience / Skillset1+ years of work experience in accounting, investments or other finance fieldsProficiency with Excel requiredExperience with Oracle applications or investment accounting subledger system a plusStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsStrong desire for continuous improvementCuriosity across disciplinesInterest in investments a plusUS Work AuthorizationUS Work Authorization required.
