The Director of Ancillary Operations is a dual-role position responsible for the day-to-day operational, financial, regulatory, and personnel management of a pathology practice, while also serving as a trusted executive-level partner to leadership of an affiliated specialty pharmacy division. This individual bridges clinical operations and corporate strategy, ensuring the pathology practice runs efficiently and compliantly, while providing high-level administrative, project, and strategic support that enables the VP of Pharmacy Operations to operate effectively.

This role requires someone comfortable moving fluidly between hands-on healthcare operations management (staffing, compliance, lab workflow, billing) and polished executive support functions (stakeholder management, board-level reporting, cross-entity coordination, confidential strategic initiatives).

 

Responsibilities include:

Executive Support to Specialty Pharmacy Division Leadership

Provides high-level administrative, operational, and strategic support to senior leadership, including the VP of Pharmacy Operations and executive leadership team. The position supports cross-functional initiatives spanning pathology practice operations and pharmacy services, prepares executive briefings and board-level materials, and serves as a liaison between pathology, pharmacy, and corporate leadership to align priorities and advance shared business objectives.

Pathology Practice Management

Oversees the daily operations, financial performance, compliance readiness, staffing, and continuous improvement efforts of the pathology practice. Responsibilities include managing laboratory workflow, specimen logistics, staff scheduling, budgeting, billing and revenue cycle performance, regulatory compliance, policy development, and quality assurance initiatives. The position also serves as a key liaison among pathologists, hospital and health-system partners, referring physicians, vendors, and internal leadership to ensure efficient, compliant, and high-quality practice operations.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, Business Administration, or related field (master's degree preferred, e.g., MHA, MBA).
• Minimum 5–7 years of progressive experience in medical practice management, preferably within pathology, laboratory, or diagnostic services.
• Prior experience providing executive-level administrative or chief-of-staff-type support strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated experience managing budgets, staff, and vendor relationships.
• Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities across two distinct business functions.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing executive-level reports and presentations.
• High degree of professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment in handling confidential matters.
• Proficiency with practice management/EHR/LIS systems and standard office productivity software (e.g., Microsoft Office/Google Workspace).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working across multiple business entities or in a matrixed organizational structure.
• Familiarity with retail pharmacy operations, PBM relationships, or retail healthcare service models.
• Certification such as ACHE (American College of Healthcare Executives), CMPE (Certified Medical Practice Executive) or PAHCOM credential.
• Project management experience or certification (e.g., PMP).
