How to qualify Please note that the following eligibility requirements will be verified during Background Investigation. Successful completion of a 400-hour minimum basic general law enforcement training course certified or approved by California POST or a similar standards agency of another state At least 664 hours of general law enforcement training (including basic course) At least two years of continuous full-time out-of-state patrol experience performing general law enforcement experience duties with an agency as defined in Commission Regulation 1001. Experience must have been acquired subsequent to the completion of basic training. Please note: deputies with corrections experience only, federal police officers in PoliceSeries 0083, and military police do not qualify No more than a six-year break from the applicant's last peace officer employment prior to the date of the application Attestation that the applicant is leaving/has left their previous law enforcement employer(s) in good standing Education: Applicants must be a United States High School Graduate, or have passed a G.E.D. or the California High School Proficiency Examination, or have attained a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited college or university in accordance with (Government Code 1031(e)). *A foreign college or university degree may be evaluated for equivalency by a credential evaluation service holding membership in the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE), and the evaluation equivalency must be provided at the time of application. Age: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age by the time of appointment. Driver’s License: Applicants must possess and maintain a valid driver license to operate an automobile at the time of application and throughout the selection process. Possession of a valid California Driver License is required prior to the date of hire. Judicial Record: Applicants must NOT have been: Convicted of a felony; Convicted of an offense involving domestic violence; Convicted of any misdemeanor that carries a penalty of prohibiting ownership, possession or control of a firearm; or Restricted from employment with the City and County of San Francisco.
VERIFICATION
Applicants may be required to submit verification of qualifying education and experience at any point during the recruitment and selection process. Note: Falsifying one’s education, training, or work experience or attempted deception on the application may result in disqualification for this and future job opportunities with the City and County of San Francisco. All work experience, education, training and other information substantiating how you meet the minimum qualifications must be included on your application by the filing deadline. Information submitted after the filing deadline will not be considered in determining whether you meet the minimum qualifications. Applications completed improperly may be cause for ineligibility, disqualification or may lead to lower scores.SELECTION PROCEDURES:
Oral Interview (100%) The Oral Interview will assess community involvement, interest and motivation, interpersonal skills, problem solving, and oral communication skills. The Oral Interview score will be used to place candidates on the eligible list. Candidates will be notified via email of their pass/fail status on the Oral Interview. Those that do not pass may request another opportunity to re‑take the test no sooner than one (1) month from their previous attempt. Eligible List / Certification Rule Candidates that pass the Oral Interview will have their names added to the eligible list. Candidate names will remain on the list for a maximum period of 12 months. The Police Department has the option to hire any candidate on the eligible list (“Rule of List”). Therefore, placement on this list neither guarantees nor implies that you will be offered employment. The Police Department will administer the remaining processes outlined below to determine who shall advance further in the hiring process and be considered for appointment. Candidates that are not selected after the background process will be withdrawn from the eligible list and may re‑apply one year from the date of their notification. Next Steps Upon successful completion of the Oral Board interview, applicants MUST begin the Basic Course Waiver Application. Once step 2 of the process is met and you're approved (Official Letter received from POST) to take POST-certified Requalification course, only then will you be invited to the Backgrounds phase of the testing process. Out-of-state applicants may meet California's Regular Basic Course (academy) training requirement by completing the Basic Course Waiver process. The Regular Basic Course is the training requirement for POST-program city police officers, sheriff's deputies, marshals, district attorney investigators, campus police officers, park police, Level I reserve peace officers and a few miscellaneous peace officer positions identified in the California Penal Code.
