Carlow University is seeking a spirited and faith filled person for the role of Campus Minister. Carlow is proud to be a campus where the Mercy values of our founders permeate all aspects of our academic community. While all of us have the responsibility to embody that heritage, the campus minister has the unique role of enlivening its spirit directly through prayer, education, and fellowship opportunities. The Campus Minister provides leadership for and actively contributes to the ongoing development, expression and reflection on the University's Catholic heritage and culture and is responsible for the oversight and development of opportunities to assist members of the university community (students, faculty and staff) in their spiritual growth and development.

Through the sacramental and liturgical life of the campus community, and other faith-related programmatic offerings, the campus minister witnesses to the value of lives rooted in contemplation and action, belief in the intellectual life, service to others, prayer and relationship to God as key to finding personal fulfillment and creating a more just and merciful world. Essential to this role is the ability to plan and implement liturgical experiences that meet student where are while engendering in them a hunger for prayer and the sacramental life. The Campus Minister collaborates with a wide-range of university personnel and academic and co-curricular departments in order to enhance the overall educational experience of Carlow University students, and with the other Catholic Universities in the Diocese of Pittsburgh and with Campus Ministers in The Conference For Mercy Higher Education.

Though this is a one-person office, the campus minister collaborates with a wide range of university personnel and is an essential component of the Center for Mercy Heritage and Service whose mission is to embed in the members of the University community an appreciation of our Mercy heritage and core values and of their relevance to our lives and work (Office of Mercy Heritage), instill a lifelong desire to serve others (Office of Mercy Service) enable a community of worship and nurture individuals in their personal faith journeys. (Campus Ministry) While each office has its own particular goals, the Center as a whole collaborates in programmatic and experiential opportunities. This position follow a ten-month academic calendar, June and July being the normal time off.

Responsibilities

Mission and Vision

• Work collaboratively with the Special Assistant to the President for Mercy Heritage to tend to the ongoing development of a Catholic and Mercy culture at Carlow.
• To create a vibrant sense of the blessings inherent in our Catholic identity.
• To actively promote the Critical Concern of the Sisters of Mercy and their commitment to Catholic Social Teaching.
• To advise and provide University departments, groups and personnel with resources and information related to the University's Catholic heritage and culture as needed and/or requested.
• To actively participate in and contribute to university meetings, processes, activities and events related to ongoing reflection and appropriation of the Mission and Values of the University.
• To serve as advisor to the Upper Room Council.
• To participate in orientation programs for new students and employees of the University.
• To serve on committees or groups whose work would benefit from or requires insights from the University's Catholic tradition.

Spiritual Growth and Development

• To work collaboratively with diocesan offices and clergy of St. Paul Cathedral as needed.
• To plan and implement all liturgical events and celebrations on campus, both Catholic and inter-denominational.
• To provide and/or oversee spiritual development, faith formation, worship opportunities and pastoral care in the Catholic tradition for the University community.
• To provide information, resources, referrals to appropriate faith formation, spiritual development, worship opportunities and pastoral care for students of all religious denominations, providing opportunities to learn one another's beliefs and traditions.
• To collaborate with co-curricular departments and personnel in providing and supporting the social dimension of students' university experience.

Pastoral Care

• To provide a spiritual/pastoral presence as needed at University functions, events and activities.
• To respond to the pastoral needs of members of the University community as needed and/or appropriate and in service to the spiritual health and wellbeing of the University community.
• To provide opportunities for members of the University community to reflect both personally and communally on their experience in light of the University's Catholic and Mercy heritage.

Administrative Responsibilities

• To develop and oversee department budget.
• To represent Carlow University to diocesan, regional and national campus ministry gatherings and groups.
• To maintain and oversee the use of McAuley Chapel (includes sacristy) and the Upper Room.
• To maintain the campus ministry section of the university's website and Isadora (
• To maintain Chapel supplies, linens, and vestments
• To hire and supervise work study students as needed and available.

Required experience, skills, knowledge:

Awareness of and appreciation of the Catholic faith and respect for other religious traditions.

Experience in planning and implementing celebrations of the Eucharist and other liturgical events on campus.

Understanding of and appreciation for Catholic higher education, the Catholic intellectual tradition and Catholic social teaching.

3-5 years of demonstrated experience of relating well and working collaboratively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff and administrators in higher education.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Strong computer application skills.

Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.

Master's degree in theology, ministry or related field.

Catholic Campus Ministry Association (CCMA) Certification (or ability to achieve certification within 2 years).

Creativity in programming.

Enthusiasm and energy for journeying with college age students.
