The Academic Success Advisor serves as a key member of the university’s advising and student success network, assigned to a specific academic college. This position works closely with college administrators, deans, faculty, and professional staff to provide supplemental advising, crisis response, and individualized student support. The Advisor focuses on two primary areas: Academic Success Advising for first- and second-year students and Crisis and Case Management for students at all academic levels. Through proactive outreach, collaborative intervention, and holistic guidance, the Academic Success Advisor helps students navigate academic and personal challenges, promoting persistence, retention, and degree completion.

You will:

Academic Success Advising (First- and Second-Year Students)

  • Provides supplemental academic advising to first- and second-year students within the assigned college, supporting their transition to university expectations and helping them establish strong academic habits.
  • Collaborates with faculty advisors, program coordinators, and the registrar’s office to ensure accurate course selection, registration, and progress toward degree completion for first year students.
  • Uses Navigate and related tools to monitor student progress, track interactions, and identify early signs of academic difficulty.
  • Conducts proactive outreach to students with midterm deficiencies, early alerts, or inconsistent course engagement.
  • Counsels students on university policies, degree requirements, and the use of advising systems such as Degree Works, Banner, and academic worksheets.
  • Provides supplemental advising support for major exploration, course completion and transition planning between academic years.
  • Participates in new student and transfer orientation, registration events, and first-year transition programming within the assigned college.
  • Refers students to tutoring, academic support, or other university resources to reinforce skill development and self-efficacy.

II. Crisis and Case Management (All Student Levels)

  • Uses Navigate and related tools to monitor student progress, track advising interactions, and identify early signs of academic difficulty.
  • Conducts proactive outreach to students with midterm deficiencies, early alerts, or inconsistent course engagement.
  • Collaborate with student support offices across campus to monitor student support case management for students within the college experiencing academic, personal, or situational challenges affecting persistence.
  • Collaborates closely with deans, associate deans, faculty, and student support offices (e.g., CASA, TASC, Accessibility Services, Counseling, and Dean of Students) to coordinate care and intervention plans for crisis management.
  • Works with students to develop Academic Success Plans that include achievable goals, connection to campus supports, and monitoring checkpoints.
  • Serves as an advocate for students navigating complex academic or personal circumstances, ensuring consistent communication among campus partners.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Refine existing and develop additional tools for use in success advising
  • Keep abreast of national academic advising and counseling standards through on-going research and/or professional development opportunities
  • Represents the department at university events
  • Assist with the advising and pre-registration of all first-year students during the university’s summer orientation program

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Master’s Degree in related academic or counseling and student personnel; experience in working with students in a higher education setting
  • Knowledge of, commitment to, and expertise at building rapport with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to student-centered advising team approach and able to resolve student issues from request to resolution
  • Understanding the academic and developmental needs of college students
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with others to accomplish team goals
  • Experience in Appreciative Advising/Certification preferred; willingness to pursue certification if hired
  • Excellent communication, counseling, organizational, interpersonal, detail oriented, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, manage databases)
  • Familiar with electronic methods of communication (i.e.; online chat, webinars, social networking sites
  • Experience in dealing with confidential materials and information
  • Ability to interact effectively with students, faculty, and administrators on campus
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours required
