Director of Development

The Office of Institutional Advancement is seeking an accomplished, responsive, collaborative, and results-oriented fundraiser to join its Advancement team. This team member will be the primary development liaison for one of the College’s academic units, and will identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward alumni and friends of the College as well as corporate, foundation and other college stakeholders. The ability to think and act strategically will be critical to the success of this position. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development , the Director of Development will focus efforts on face‑to‑face contact with prospects whose philanthropic capacity is $50,000 and more, managing a portfolio of 150 to 200 major donor prospects. It is expected that the Director will average 15 to 20 face‑to‑face strategic visits, which result in moves toward major gifts, and 2 to 4 major commitment solicitations per month. The Director will be strategic to ensure that solicitation "ask" are maximized based on donor capacity and philanthropic interest that is aligned with the College’s needs. The Director of Development will play a pivotal role in the identification and qualification of major donor prospects in preparation for Morehouse’s next capital campaign. Strategically maximize solicitation asks based on donor capacity and philanthropic interest aligned with the College’s needs. Play a pivotal role in the identification and qualification of major donor prospects in preparation for Morehouse’s next capital campaign. Travel as required. Articulate the vision, mission, goals and core values of the College and its programs to internal and external stakeholders. Work closely with unit heads on fundraising initiatives and oversee fundraising volunteers where applicable. Work with AVP to ensure Institutional Advancement serves the College in a full range of advancement support services including prospect research and management, communications, records management, technology, and donor stewardship. Manage portfolio solicitation process, including recommending proposal ask amounts and monitoring committee/volunteer assignments. Utilize appropriate development reporting processes; monitor and objectively evaluate all fundraising appeals; develop standard activity and progress reports for monitoring and evaluation. Facilitate the solicitation of cash and planned gifts. Assist with professional development and best practices for College community related to fundraising. Maintain relevancy in the field through continuous learning and professional development. Maintain strict confidentiality as outlined in the College’s Policy on Confidentiality of Constituent Information. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, business, liberal arts, or related field. Five or more years of related and progressively more responsibility or expansive work experience in professional fundraising, alumni/donor relations, public relations, marketing, or related field. Experience with "Moves Management" or related strategic relationship development. Experience with planned giving techniques and vehicles. Working knowledge of tax laws affecting charitable giving. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and intellectual curiosity. Collaborative team-oriented style. Ability to work with a variety of personality types. Excellent interpersonal skills. Valid driver’s license. Preferred Qualifications Experience in a higher education environment, having participated in a comprehensive campaign. Proven and demonstrated ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts of $50,000 and above. Experience with fundraising and financial software. Preferred Education/Experience Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, business, liberal arts, or related field. Five or more years of related and progressively more responsibility or expansive work experience in professional fundraising, alumni/donor relations, public relations, marketing, or related field.
