Job Description Starting Date: Immediately Department or Location: Chief Academic Officer Position Type: Certified Job Title: Chief Academic Officer FLSA: Status: Exempt Reports To: Deputy Superintendent of School Improvement & Strategic Initiatives Days Worked: 235 Days (12 months) Job Qualifications Education: Educational Specialist degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in educational leadership, school curriculum, or a related field is required. A doctorate degree is preferred. Certification or Licensure: Must possess or meet the qualifications for a Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) Certification in Educational Leadership or equivalent out-of-state leadership certification. Skills: Demonstrates effective school or district level leadership in academic program development and evaluation. Demonstrates the ability to build and lead collaborative, inclusive teams while exercising sound decision‑making to balance academic priorities and ensure curriculum and federal program compliance. Demonstrates knowledge of Special Education requirements, national and Georgia standards, instructional strategies, assessment systems, and federal education regulations. Demonstrates the ability to manage multiple priorities within a complex educational system, use data to inform planning and reform efforts, and apply technology and writing skills to prepare reports and presentations. Demonstrates strong interpersonal, communication, and cross‑departmental collaboration skills to support cohesive implementation of academic programs and initiatives. Work Experience: Three or more years of successful teaching experience and three or more years of progressively responsible administrative experience in curriculum and instructional leadership roles are required. Experience with district-level curriculum development and evaluation is preferred. Documented success leading large‑scale academic initiatives is required. Other combinations of relevant education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the position effectively may be considered. Primary Duty The Chief Academic Officer provides leadership for the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the district’s instructional and academic programs, including Teaching and Learning, Special Education, High School Programming and Workforce Development, and Georgia Network for Educational and Therapeutic Support (GNETS). This position involves implementing the academic vision and strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the Profile of a Graduate. The Chief Academic Officer oversees curriculum, instruction, assessment, and student support initiatives to improve academic outcomes and collaborates with district and school leaders to ensure compliance with state and federal instructional requirements. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Establishes procedures to effectively supervise the implementation of curriculum and/or programs. Develops and leads the district instructional planning and implementation. Leads the development and execution of academic policies, programs, and initiatives. Promotes interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Develops and implements strategies to enhance student retention, progression, and graduation. Oversees and coordinates the preparation and administration of the budgets for assigned areas in compliance with established Local, State, and Federal policies and regulations. Develops a plan for continuous improvement in the quality of school instruction by all certified educators of the district. Develops and implements a curriculum to prepare students for academic and career. Plans and coordinates the curriculum development process for all relevant areas. Oversees and aligns the efforts of curriculum and instruction services to reflect horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the P‑12 instructional program throughout the system. Provides direction, goal setting, and support for all curriculum unit planning, development, and revisions. Develops, implements, and supervises all curriculum and instruction and assigned departments policies and procedures. Provides a communication model for instructional staff to better serve the student population. Coordinates all curriculum units to converge all resources and create cohesive strategies in the curriculum alignment process. Develops, oversees, and evaluates school system plans for curriculum development, instructional material adoptions and course additions, minority achievement, and state standards and accountability. Initiates collaboration with other state and local agencies to share resources that enhance the educational community’s learning environment. Collaborates with colleges and universities to ensure student access to dual enrollment and advanced studies. Directs and coordinates the preparation of research studies, analyses, evaluations, and reports requested by the Superintendent and/or the Board of Education. Contributes to the continued advancement of student achievement including special education supports, ESOL, gifted services, and advanced studies. Oversees data collection for reporting and management as required for federal, state, and local mandates. Attends and participates in local, state, and national initiatives to ensure the district implements the most effective research‑based instructional practices. Works with schools and departments in the monitoring of student achievement and school effectiveness. Assists with the analysis and presentation of research findings and evaluation results. Assists the Assistant Superintendent to ensure all support systems are in place to meet student growth and school effectiveness measures.
