Job Title Speech & Debate Team Manager/Asst. Advisor Location Natick High School Reports To Vice Principal of Teaching & Learning Work days / FTE 2026-2027 school year Job Goal The Speech & Debate Team Business Manager / Assistant Advisor supports both the instructional and operational needs of the competitive high school speech and debate program. This role focuses on supporting students in strengthening communication skills, confidence, critical thinking, and leadership while maintaining high standards of competitive excellence and team culture. In addition to student performance coaching, mentorship, and community building, this role also incorporates tournament oversight and team operations. Qualifications Education High School graduate or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred. Professional Certification MA Teaching Licensure & experience with National Speech and Debate competitions preferred. Specialized Knowledge Solid foundation in student‑centered coaching Knowledge of the developmental needs of adolescents Understanding of theories and methodologies for coaching adolescents Understanding of the academic, social, and emotional needs of adolescents Understanding of and commitment to the principles and practices of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice Preferred Experience Demonstrated experience coaching or teaching speech, debate, theater, forensics, communication, or related performance‑based disciplines (preferred but not required) Experience working with students with disabilities/special abilities preferred Experience working with students who are English language learners preferred Experience with Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Classroom, etc.) and PowerSchool preferred; training will be provided to the right candidate Skills Demonstrated aptitude for work to be performed Ability to create a welcoming team environment for students Ability to coach and support students in improving their individual and team skills Ability to guide students in selecting, editing, analyzing, and interpreting competitive material in alignment with tournament rules and standards Experience supervising students at competitions, managing travel logistics, and ensuring student safety and accountability Strong written and verbal communication skills Strong interpersonal skills Passion for working with students, families, and colleagues Flexibility and collaboration Ability to multitask in a fast‑paced, supportive environment that nurtures student growth Organization and ability to meet ongoing, time‑sensitive deadlines for work production Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Principal may find appropriate and in conformity with state certification requirements. Essential Functions of the Job (not limited to) Student Mentorship, Coaching, and Program Development Deliver individual and group coaching to improve public speaking, presentation skills, performance technique, audience engagement, and self‑confidence Mentor students in goal‑setting, leadership development, time management, and personal growth within a competitive environment Guide students in selecting appropriate competitive material; assist in editing content to meet event requirements and competition standards Support students in literary analysis, interpretation, and character development to strengthen performance quality and storytelling Provide detailed feedback on structure, pacing, articulation, physical presence, emotional authenticity, and clarity of message Create curriculum, lesson plans, and structured practice agendas aligned with competitive standards and developmental goals Program Administration & Operations Support weekly full‑team meetings and student leadership meetings to foster collaboration, accountability, and a positive team culture Manage the Speech & Debate Team budget, including tracking expenses, reimbursements, and fundraising accounts Manage team administration including registrations, paperwork, fee tracking, attendance records, tournament logistics, and scheduling Coordinate tournament planning, travel arrangements, and event communication Attend and supervise regional and travel tournaments, providing student support and logistical coordination Support fundraising initiatives and events to support program operations and travel needs Engage families, alumni, and community partners as appropriate Support equity of access and participation for all students Nights and some weekends are expected, as well as travel Successful candidate will have to complete all of the necessary training as assigned by Natick Public Schools The information contained in this job description is for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for this position.
